Hot Spot 3 Attachment(s) Thumper has had a hot spot according to the Vet since February 4. The Vet gave me Gentra Spray and told me to spray it on the area every twelve hours. It seems to be a little better as it is now smaller but it still isn't completely healed and the Vet said it should go away within a week. Does anyone know how long a hot spot can last? Thumper is no longer licking the area. It is on his butt. I clipped away the excess hair as well. I don't have a shaver so I couldn't completely shave the area. It is red and hard around the area. There are some black spots as well. I uploaded some pics. Should I bring him back to the vet or does it just take longer to heal? Also is there something else I should be giving him to help the healing process? He was supposed to get groomed last week but I keep pushing back the appt. I am hoping he will be healed by next Saturday. I hate to keep canceling on them. |
One of my dogs gets an occasional hotspot. I use Domboro's solution. You can pick up domeboro powder packets in any Walgreens or cvs in the first aid aisle. Use the package directions to make a solution. Then use a washcloth saturated with the solution and use it a couple of times a day on the area. I would try to keep the washcloth on for at least five mins. This stuff will help dry it out. When you're done with each compress just rinse the area with clean water. I would hold off on grooming until completely gone. |
A "hot spot" is a layman's term for what is an overgrowth of the normal staph intermedius on a dog's skin. When the staph is overgrown, this causes a skin infection called pyoderma. The infection can be diffuse (all over the body) or localized (aka a "hot spot"...which is what you're seeing. Like a scab, hot spots can take a couple weeks to fully heal over bc the skin can be compromised. Most often, hot spots or diffuse pyoderma are secondary to allergies. Does your kiddo have enviro allergies...? Does he chew or lick his paws, or itch? Recurrent skin infections, however, should be really explored bc that can mean different things....Cushings, thyroid issue etc... |
Thumper does have environmental allergies that he takes zyrtec for. Lately they have been fine. This is the second hotspot since Sept however the last one was much smaller and cleared up within a few days. This one is taking much longer to go away. Today, the scab came off but it wasn't completely healed because there were tiny spots of blood. Kind of like when you scrape a knee. I put more medicine on it and also rubbed it with some hydrocortisone lotion. |
