Just got home from the vet's office. Puppy had roundworm and ear mites. Dr says he is only about 5 weeks old but is in good shape other than the ear mites and worms. He is weighing in at 1 pound today. He was given dewormed and ear mite drops to take home. He had loose stool as soon as I got him home, probably from the wormer I assume

Thats great! Poor pup 5 weeks! Don't worry everything will work out. Daisy still has loose stool but thats also because she doesn't eat solid food yet lol i got my self a picky eater. Daisy is 1 pound and 12 ounces and she's 6 weeks lol not far behind! He will grow healthy as long as you keep up with him :)

Not necessarily. For this particular pup, he may have a better life, but you have to look at the bigger picture. The sellers/breeders got what they wanted. The bred their dogs and got puppies and most likely made a profit since they spent nothing on their care, health testing etc. They made money so they will likely do it again. There will be more pups in the same exact position in a few months be the fact they did have buyers. This only tells them that what they do is acceptable. The only way to try to stop them is first of all don't buy from people like this, no matter how sad and poor the puppies look. Second, report these people to the authorities. Keep calling them so much so that they have to at least change their phone number. Give them as much grief as you can, bc surely the poor bred pup will give you grief over worry about his health for the rest of his life.

Everything said above is spot on...makes me absolutely ill.....people MUST stop buying these puppies or it will never end! What is so very sad, they are making laws and breeding so expensive for LEGITIMATE breeders, that play by the rules, that do it all right, for all the right reasons....and THEY are getting forced out of business because of the expense of regulatory control....but people like this just continue to sludge along, bottom of the gutter, .....criminal, and the authorities are going after and shutting down legitimate, concerned, caring breeders, through extreme regulatory control and expensive, cost prohibitive mandates and regulations, allowing the scum to continue to fester and reproduce and sell sick, genetically compromised puppies, to people that are willingly buying and supporting this practice.

People, PLEASE stop buying sick, immature, worm infested, poorly bred CHEAP puppies......remember, you get what you pay for......you pay now, or you pay later, but you WILL pay..........all these bargain basement puppies may not cost you up front, but you are going to pay dearly trying to treat the genetic issues, deformities, and illnesses, (and may still loose the baby....) these shysters are pushing out there on you, shucking and grinning, as they take your money and hand you a puppy that probably will not survive to the age this breed is supposed to live.

I think it's equally important to point out that just bc a pup is priced high, it doesn't mean it's more special, or healthy. Those are the same people who scam the rich and clueless (or careless) like Paris Hilton. They want their dog to be a status symbol, so the more money spent, the better right? :rolleyes:

The sad thing about the new legislation they are trying to pass, is it indeed only hurts those responsible breeders who follow laws and rules. Do you think that puppymillers who have no conscience and no morals will all of a sudden stop doing what they are doing bc there are new laws? Of course not! They will just ignore the laws like they are doing now. Just like the gun debate. Making it harder for law abiding citizens to get guns is not going to make the criminals stop getting their guns illegally. It's absolute crazyness!

Just be very cautious when you find a "cheap" yorkie....it cost a lot of money to do right by these dogs...vet checks, special food for momma, special food for baby, etc.....That is why we reputable breeders will harp and harp about "buy your breeder first"....KNOW what a good breeder insists on....if a breeder says they have to let a baby go at 6-10 weeks old because "grandma is dying in Tim-Buck-Two and I have to rush off....", or any other excuse they come up with....reputable breeders do NOT let babies go early!!! We have contingency plans!! We have back up plans! We dont have ANY "OTHER" plans that will take us away from our babies....we dont go on cruises so we need to dump these newborns at 5 weeks old....we just dont DO THIS!!!!!

I disagree....price means a whole bunch, you just need to know how to use the very telling information you are getting by the price....if you find a cheap yorkie, you had better be checking it out carefully....especially if you are getting this cheap yorkie thru one of those sites like Crags list or news paper ads. Overpriced dogs should be looked at carefully, you need to know what you should be getting in a dog, etc.....but a cheap yorkie is immediate cause for question....just like a cheap Corvette.....

Exactly. Too cheap and too expensive are major red flags. The problem is there are plenty of bybs that sell in that sweet spot as well $1000-2000.

Yes that's why I said price means nothing, because a lot of s**tty backyard breeders sell for 1000 and up. So just because the dog is high priced doesn't mean you are getting what you pay for.

That is very true...but you can bet your life, if it is a cheap dog, it is most assuredly something that sends up red flags....breeding Yorkies correctly is NOT a cheap venture....if you have pups going out at 5,6,7,8 weeks of age, it is to avoid all the expensive vaccinations which should not even be started until minimum of 8 weeks old...babies are protected by moms immunity until approximately 8 weeks old.....cheap dogs are more of a concern than expensive ones, and if you come across a yorkie that is "cheap", you have to be concerned about quality....

I can relate, I got my yorkie Cricket at 6 weeks, ( I had just lost my previous yorkie Daisy at 16 weeks old due to aspiration pneumonia, I had taken her to be groomed and something happened to her , I think water got in her mouth and after one night at the ER vets office, she died) :( I was devastated! I got Cricket, (current yorkie) from a family that had the parents as their pets and it was their first litter. when I went to go pick up my puppy, I was having a hard time deciding which one and the woman said that if they were keeping one (they weren't) they would keep a certain one, well, that's the one I took. I guess I'm telling my experience to say that a couple weeks after I got her home, Cricket became sick and she was later diagnosed with a liver shunt, she had surgery a few weeks after that to repair her shunt and is doing better, she will be 3 on March 27th and weighs 8 lbs. I'm honestly so glad I have her because I shudder to think of what would have happened to her had I NOT taken her. I know I probably should have turned and ran in the opposite direction, but I didn't and now I have a dog that I LOVE TO PIECES!!!!!! :D

Wow I am so saddened yet so happy of the story of cricket, thank God you ended up getting her or she most likely would not be here today. I'm so disgusted with hearing more and more stories of people giving these puppies at 5 to 6 weeks. It is so unfair to the dogs, and so heartbreaking for us to see them go through hard times. What were the symptoms of the liver shunt? I know it is very common in yorkies

Drooling
Head pressing
Seizures ( I think Cricket had one just before she was rushed to the vet)
Diarrhea and vomiting
Apparent blindness ( this happened with Cricket, it was scary)

Those are the main ones, I should have revised my post earlier to say that Cricket's surgery did not fix her shunt completely, she has what's called MVD ( micro vascular dysplasia, which are multiple little tiny shunts that cannot be repaired), but she is on hills L/D dry food and she takes a medicine called lactulose, it helps her have bowel movements and keeps toxins out of her body.

I have read this several times as each time I couldnt finish as I was crying. This breaks my heart . How can anyone ever be cruel to ANY animal is beyond me.
Yorkiemom you have been a godsend to me in my new motherhood and everything you said is so true on every level.
Mia I am so happy this poor baby has you for a mom , you will have such a wonderful loving little girl in the long run. I am just heartbroken at all you and that baby and all those other babies had to go thru.
My heart and prayers are with you and your baby and all the babies that never get a chance.

Thank you so much for your kind words, the baby is doing remarkably well! He is currently running around the living room playing with his pile of toys, carrying around a rope. I'm shocked at the change in him after less than a week in good care

I recently had the same thing happen to me. I bought a puppy that was supposedly eight weeks, which is the legal age in California to sell puppies. I took her to the vet and found out she was no more than six weeks old. The vet told me to keep food in her bowl at all times so she could eat when she wants. I gave her wet food mixed with water until her teeth started to come in and then I slowly started to put kibble in with her wet food. My baby also did not drink water or go poop for a day or so after I got her. I believe it was the shock of being brought to a new home and a three hour car drive. Penny is now ten and half weeks old and she is doing fine. The only issues I have is that she bites a little hard when she gets excited. That is because she was not able to learn how to control her biting from her mother and siblings. For the first two weeks I had her I made sure not to leave her alone and she slept in bed with me. I did this because under a normal situation she would be constantly surrounded by her mother and siblings. I recently began to crate train her and at first she seemed to have separation anxiety, but with a few days of being put in the crate and me leaving and coming back she has seemed to understand crate time as her time to relax. I hope that your baby has a smooth transition like my baby did. I believe that it is better she came home with me, then staying with a breeder that obviously did not care about her or her siblings because they were all sold with in a week.

These people are sick, the so called "breeder" isn't even replying to my texts anymore. He is doing well on wet food with puppy milk. I just bought acana dry food for him today and plan on breaking it up and slowly incorporating it into his food. Will this be okay ? I'm so glad these little pups came to US at this young age, rather than someone that would just have the poor baby as an accessory.

Just be careful when he eats and watch him eat in case he has an issue with the solid food. I added water along with the solid food and wet food for the first few days. No Penny can eat solid food no problem.

We are having the exact same set of issues with our Bella. She had the surgery at just under 6 mo. and is now just a little over a year old. It is good to hear from others who have had this issue and still have a happy healthy Yorkie!

PLEASE, contact that person that LIED to you about this puppy....tell them you know this baby is NOT even 8 weeks old and that is the legal age a puppy must be to be sold in Ca. Tell them you fully intend to report them to the authorities in Ca....is that puppy "registered"?? Report that "breeder" to the registration authorities....hopefully, they have registered that litter with the AKC....but they are professional shysters and know how to falsify papers....report them anyway...most dont go thru the AKC, but choose those off brand registries that dont follow up on "minor details" like what is legal......

"Yorkies For Dummies" is a book that is priceless....you certainly need to get this book and read it cover to cover....you need to have some kind of a clue about what you must do to help this enfant survive. Do NOT take the baby all over town.....this baby must stay inside.....isolated away from other people and other dogs and exposure to diseases from other dogs....germs that are in the grass and on peoples clothes...PARVO especially is treacherous and will possibly kill that baby if exposed to this disease....vaccinations are ineffective until 8 weeks or later....maternal immunity waxes and wanes and will not allow anything but NeoPar to be effective....I can promise, no backyard breeder or puppy mill is giving THAT shot......

Praying for this little soul....You need to get ahold of that lying "breeder" and............
at the very least, let them know you are on to them and you intend to follow through with the authorities.
Hi I just joined and read your post. In July my Mom came home with a 7 week old Yorkie puppy she bought from the Vancouver Mall in Vancouver, Washington. Wasn't long before I knew something was wrong with him. Ive never had a yorkie and know little about dogs in general. Ive fallen in Love with this little guy and will do whatever I must to get him better. After over $1000 in Vet /surgeon/pet emergency visits Im told he has liver shunt, but is good candidate for surgery. After reading the paperwork she came home with, (which looks like a fifth grader filled out) and speaking to an attorney theres no legal action we can take to be compensated unless we give this little angle back to them. No way!!!!!

So can you please put me in the right direction to at least turn them in to proper authorities. Ill never give him back so they can put him down and give us the $1100 back or a new puppy. Makes me sick the law looks at him as property.

Any advice on how to get these monsters or on liver shunt homemade diet to get him strong before surgery would be great.
