confused! Hello, I had posted a few days ago and got some good advice but went back to the vet and am confused so looking for more thoughts on the situation. I had taken my 10 yr old tedy to the vet for a cough and some weight concerns and the vet heard a slight murmur. They put him on doxycycline and told me that if I was worried about the murmur that I could look further into it with some testing but felt the cough was unrelated. I did some research and went back for his follow up appointment. I asked what grade his murmur was and was told it was grade two but was told again that they were not concerned about it as it was mild and happens as they age and the cough was due to it being winter and having the heat on in the house and that they would do a chest xray to give me piece of mind. All of the info that I have read says that a coughing dog with a heart murmur is a cause for concern! I am having the chest xray done next week but this is driving me crazy with worry. Any thoughts? Even with the heart murmur at grade two shouldn't they put him on meds?? |
I would find a specialist, a cardiologist....I would be certain of the exact nature of the condition the vet has given you to date. You can always proceed much more effectively from a position of being completely informed. When the diagnosis was fixed as accurate and exact, then you proceed with a treatment plan from that position. They have very effective medication they give for this condition....I had a little girl years ago with a severe heart issue, she received medication for it and she lived an additional 10 years! I had another little pet in my group, that also developed an enlarged heart with a murmur....she was put on meds that relieved the workload on her little heart, and she lived an additional 10 years on medication.... Your baby is 10 years old....with meds and some adjustments to activity level this baby could go another 5-7 years!! Just like all of us that develop conditions as we age, meds and activity levels can be adjusted and many additional years of a happy, fulfilled life can be expected for this baby! (FYI and clarity: these little dogs were NOT in my breeding program....they were little yorkies I had bought from individuals, before I knew how this all works with crooked back yard breeders!) |
Thank you for your response! So glad you had many years with your baby! That makes me feel so much better to hear your experience. I don't know what I would do without my Tedy |
My Wylie is on Elalapril for his murmur and CHF and it works beautifully! I'd ask about getting your kiddo on that med. |

Is the heart enlarged? Sometimes when the heart is enlarged it pushes on the trachea and that makes them cough. I had a dog with an enlarged heart and that is what happened to her |

I went thru something similar with one of my girls, I had them do an echo after the heart xray. It gave me piece of mind. I know when you start digging online you can find a ton of stuff to cause worry, I surely did. This is pretty common in yorkies, I do suggest a humidifier for the house if it ends up the cough is from the dry heat. I also give mine a little manuka honey for coughs, it works wonders and it's great for their immune systems. |
If you are still concerned, by all means, get a second opinion. |
