Help help help!!! My Yorkie ate chocolate chips Chewie weighs 12 pounds. My sister left a bag of chocolate chips lying on her bed and chewie attacked it. The bag is 11.5 oz. she says it was half full and were assuming that's what he ate. As soon as she found out I immediately gave him hydrogen peroxide and he threw up within minutes, I waited about 20 minutes after and I gave him not even a teaspoon. Probably .5 ml. He acting completely normal. He's drank some water. His heart rate is normal, breathing is normal. Is there anything else I should do? My vet is closed and I'll have to call tomorrow morning. I am fully stocked on Flagyl, Albon Suspension, and Lomotil Liquid. I feel like I should give him some Flagyl but I'm not sure. Help! |
I would not administer any drugs without talking to a vet first, especially eating the chocolate and giving the peroxide. Keep in mind I am no medical professional. They will get into any and everything. I would be calling an emergency vet to see what I needed to do and I would be doing that quickly meaning tonight. |

I called the emergency line and they said that inducing the vomiting was the first thing to do. And he did vomit, twice now after following their instructions. He's acting completely normal so I'm praying for the best. |
I will be praying for Chewie and you too! It never ceases to amaze me the trouble these little ones can get into, I have to watch Presley like a hawk, he is mischievous and looks for trouble :) |

Why you are "fully stocked" on the meds you listed is beyond me, but please speak with a vet about when you should be giving them. Hope your pup is doing ok now. In the future, since you do have an EC to call, I would suggest you call them before doing anything. Hopefully you won't have any more such emergencies. :) But,these pups can get into the darndest things. Peroxide can be indicated for some things that are ingested, but not for others. Better to call first! |
I'm "Fully stocked" on these meds because the veterinarian prescribed them for chewie. Chewie is very adventurous per say and he'll eat whatever he lays his eyes on. This isn't the first time he gets into trouble with food, he's done it twice before. I swear every time it's been worse and worse. I really hope this is the last of it. I'm going to have to child proof my house. Thank you all for your responses and concerns. I'm glad to say chewie is doing well. I will update tomorrow |

Albon and Flagyl are both antibiotics. Lomotil is for diarrhea. |

I thought when you are given an antibiotic you have to administer it all until it's done? You shouldn't have any on hand at any given time unless you are already giving it right? I also want to say that yes, you do really need to puppy proof your house, and now! I learned the hard way. I had a foster that got into everything. He loved to eat. He found a container of bird seed and pushed it over and ate a whole pile of it. His poop looked like a bird seed cake. He got into trash constantly. The thing that did him in was we think he got into some rat poison or some type of poison. Unfortunately we could not save him. Something as simple as crating him when I was not watching him would have saved his life! |
