Recovering from LCP (FHO) Surgery Well, we are on day 4 post Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease surgery. The orthopaedic vet removed his femoral head and neck last Friday. The joint was collapsing on itself. He is doing really well. The only problem we have is the confinement. He hates crates, so he is at work with me this week, and I'm off next week. He is also already putting weight on the leg on restroom trips, so we have to watch that as well. Glad this is over and will really be glad when we can do water therapy in the bathtub after the stitches come out. |
I'm happy to hear surgery went well and that he recovering well. Confinement and restricted activity are really hard on both pup and parent! Glad you are able to have him close to you. When do the stitches come out? |
December 28. Seems like a lifetime but will fly by! |
Glad he's doing well. |
Poor baby! Poor mommy!! It's probably harder for you then him. Get well little man and be nice to your mommy, she loves you a lot. |
Thank you everyone. Yes, buddybear, it is much harder on me after the surgery. Pitiful baby. |
I have not had any issues with LCP recovery and did not do really strict crate rest with any of the ones I have had done. Why do you have to watch the walking? Honestly that is good he is using it! (Unless for some reason your surgeon does not want it) After the surgery I have been encouraged to allow them to walk a lot for exercise to strenthen the muscle and help it support the joint. |
Ladyjane, I completely agree with you. However, my vet and the orthopaedic vet are adamant they do not want him walking on it and very strict crate rest (only bathroom for less than 5 minutes). It's almost cruel. I'm not crating him at all -- he gets completely crazy with anxiety in one. Luckily, my bosses don't care if he comes to work with him, and he is no trouble at all. The vets want me doing leg exercises (which is close to the same thing as him sporadically walking on it). I have to move the leg as if he is walking. When researching this before the surgery, I found that most vets do not indicate strict crate rest anymore. The only thing I can guess is where I live. Mississippi seems to be behind on everything else, so why not dogs? LOL! Thank you. |
