Kennel Cough or Stress Cough I have had my little pup for almost a week now. He was great the first couple of days and now he is making the "goose" sound and is hacking, but nothing is coming out. I spoke to the breeder I purchased him from and she stated it could be "Stress Cough"; and it is similar to Kennel Cough. Has anyone heard of this before. I am crate training him and he does whine a bit at night, but nothing out of the ordinary. Can anyone shed light on the difference of the two and should he be seen by a vet? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I have never heard of anything called "stress cough," and couldn't find anything searching on the internet. Has your pup been to the vet for a wellness check since you brought him home? It's highly advisable to do this with a new pup, and is usually part of a contract for the health guarantee. You probably have more shots to follow up on too. Has he been around any other dogs since you brought him home? I believe kennel cough can only be picked up by close proximity to other dogs. |
Was this puppy given the kennel cough/bordetella vaccine...? If so, he likely caught kennel cough from the vaccine, as this is quite common. A puppy w/ KC needs meds asap so that it doesn't progress to pneumonia. Welcome to YT :)! |

He has not been around any other dogs other than his brothers and sisters. I have no other dogs at home. He has been around my grandchildren, but that is it. He has not had the vaccination, I was told that that itself causes KC. He is due for his shots in a week. I am calling to make an appointment with vet today. |
Could definately be Kennel Cough. Never heard of a stress cough. Is he acting okay or is he very quiet? Is he eating? Please keep us updated. |
my puppy has a respiratory/flu, that I think was from the bordetella that was given to her...because she was perfectly healthy and i live in CA which our weather is hot...a week later she got this congestion....She has been on antibiotics for 2 weeks....her nose feels congested I wish I can help her release whatever she has in there...the bordetella was given to her through the nose.... |
I will update you all after his vet appointment this afternoon. Thank you all for your help and replies. |

A dog that has has The vaccine recently also can pass it ... I do not understand this vaccine purpose ... |
My little guy does have Kennel Cough, he is not on antibiotics. I feel much better knowing he is going to be okay. Thank you all for your help and kind words. I am a new Yorkie owner so I love that I can come on here and research and ask questions. Thanks again! |
