Found My Baby Stiff But Semi-Conscious ?

I have a 12 week old baby name La'La, she is super happy and playful she is always running up and down the house and getting herself into trouble. When I came home from school today La'La was just fine, she was running and playing with me, we went on our walk and then had dinner. I was doing some homework and hadn't seen her for a while and when I called her she didn't come so, I went to look for her. I found her on the living room floor STIFF as a board, her head was tilted back and all four of her legs straight out (not convulsing). At this point I was in a panic I called her name and she was semi conscious and I guess when she tried to come and couldn't get up she just rolled and wouldn't quit rolling (still stiff) I placed my hand on her and was talking to her. She stopped rolling but was still stiff and breathing very weird. I was so scared and becoming hysterical, I called a local 24 hour vet and took her in immediately. They tested her blood sugar and told me it was normal and she did not seem to be in shock cause by hypoglycaemia but sent me home with a supplement to treat hypoglycaemia. I'm so confused at this point, did my baby have a seizure or what? I feel like I was so uninformed by the vet and then sent home to just hope it won't happen again. I absolutely have no idea what happened to her. She is moving around now and seems to be coming back into herself. I am going to take the day off tomorrow to stay home with her and just make sure she is ok. I really have no idea what happened to her at this point And I'm so scared, i never want to see my baby like that again.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

I am sure you are out of your mind with panic and worry.....First thing tomorrow, contact your breeder and tell her what has happened.....see if she has a history of any other pups experiencing this issue.....not that she will probably ever admit it to you. Next, I would advise you to take your baby to your vet....some of the people on here have babies that have seizures, maybe a couple of times, then nothing else....I would be crazy with anxiety, just waiting for the other foot to fall! Seizure activity is not normal...there is a reason behind it, something caused it, and I want answers when I have a pup that does something unusual! I hope you are able to get answers....it is possible your baby "bumped her head"...maybe running, maybe fell from furniture, etc....but I would really try to get some answers......

Thank you for you help and concern.

I called the breeder and upon calling him was told that she probably had something called hypoglycemic shock and I quote " that is at the negligence of the owner and does not fall under the warranty, so you would not get your money back". I am so upset, I'm not asking for my money back. La'La is apart of my family I would never just want to give her back. I WANT ANSWERS, and its clear now that I won't get any from him. He made me feel like it was my fault, but I know I have done everything right (according to what he told me in the beginning). I did a quick scan on what the symptoms for hypoglycemia and the article it stated that there were stages to the symptoms of hypoglycemia- with seizure being the last stage. I did not recognize any of the symptoms. She is never out of my sight for long I think I would have noticed. Also he told me that if I take her to the vet and spend more then I paid for her I would only get what I paid for her back. I am concerned about the well being of my puppy not the money! All I want if for my puppy to be okay. It’s so funny to me how nice and informative he was when I was buying her and then all of a sudden he is just and ass hole (please excuse my language). La'La seems to be fine this morning and I was up a million times to check on her last night. I feel like I can't sleep and when I do I just remember the image of her lying there so helpless. I hope this is nothing serious and I’m thinking now its best I put insurance on her just incase another emergency like that happens. I am so scared for my little girl! Please keep her in you prayers!!!

Do you think this was a seizure or what was this?

Do you walk her outside? 12 weeks old seems a bit young to take outside....maybe you meant something else when you said you walked her.

I would also not let her have the run of the house. Confine her to the room or space you are in so you can keep a close eye on her. They're very much like babies, will get into anything & everything. Also keep her confined when nobody is home.

Hope she's ok & it was a one time thing!

LaLas_momma 11-03-2015 09:47 AM

Hey I do walk her out side just in the back yard mainly on the deck. I know she is you but i guess I feel like she needs fresh air form being in all day.

I do keep her locked up when I'm not home ( in a large crate ) where I keep her food, a pee pad and her bedding with a few toys. Keeping her confined to the areas that I am is a good idea. I'm going to go and get a baby gate or two and implement that today. Thank YOU!!!

I do put her in a large crate when I leave where she has food, water, a pee pad and her bed with some toys. Thank you for the advice on keeping her confined to the area I am in. I will be sending my husband for a baby gate or two this way we can implement that effective today.

Ok, Thanks for clarifying, I was thinking that's what you meant, outside in your secured backyard.

Have you called your regular vet? I would take her in for a follow up immediately.

I don't have a vet for her yet. I just got her a few weeks ago and it is not even time for her second shots yet. The vet told me last night that because of this incident I should hold off on her shots for 3 weeks to ensure she is ok first. I'm so confused, this is all so overwhelming!

Are you feeding her high quality food. Is she free to eat whenever. I wonder about seizure usually there is shaking and you know it's seizure. I would definitely get her checked by a good vet. Prayers for healing and no more episodes.

LaLas_momma 11-03-2015 11:37 AM

I don't have a regular vet as of yet because she has not even been given her second shots yet. i have been researching recommended vets in my area all day! Her food is called Royal Canin - Development Puppy. I it the brand that is sold at all vet clinics in my area and was given to me by the breeder.

I have an appointment for her on Friday!

Maximo 11-03-2015 12:16 PM

Terrifying experience for you! I'm glad your baby is doing well after that episode and that you have an appointment scheduled with the vet.

How much does she weigh, and what is the longest stretch of time that she is alone?

To prevent hypoglycemia episodes -- it's good that she has food at all times, but sometimes Yorkies, especially puppies, do not want to eat while they are alone. If you are gone for 4 hours or more, probably would be helpful to have someone look in on her and make sure she eats a little.

Puppies may require some coaxing to eat regularly even when you are with her.

It would be a good idea too to have basic blood tests done at your vet appointment, if they were not done at the 24 hour vet. Basic chemistry, liver function tests.

Best wishes for your little girl and you.

Want to add -- if your baby does not appear 100% strong and healthy on Friday, do not let the vet give her the vaccinations. Vaccinations are important, but should not be given when the puppy or adult dog is in any kind of health distress.

Yorkiemom1 11-03-2015 12:35 PM

I have used Royal Canin for at least 35+ years on all my dogs, from babies, thru breeding, thru whelping, into baby stage, young adult, middle age, thru seniors...from cradle to grave and have never had any issues with the food. I free feed, and whoever wants to eat, eats whenever they want to eat....I only had 2 over weight dogs in all these years.....be sure your baby has food available to him at all times, and that he is eating it! Count the kibble so you will know if he is eating. Everyone has their choice of food, but regardless of what your baby is on as we speak, it had nothing to do with his food, especially if it is RC!!! Leave baby on the food he is used to eating or you will be getting into a whole 'nother mess of "Food-Merry-Go-Round"!!

When I sell a baby to a new owner, I have established a relationship with that new owner. To me and my breeding program, this is of utmost importance. My babies are seen by my vet, an exam/report card of systems is drawn up by my vet, and the new owner gets that "report card" that outlines all values of that pup's anatomy/system, with all the good things as well as any issues that may be present.....my new owners are required to have that baby seen by their vet and system check done by their vet, within 24-36 hours from getting that baby in their possession.....I am to be notified immediately, by the vet, if there are any issues or findings that MY vet did not catch, and we go from there. You did not have such a agreement with your breeder?

You need to have your baby seen by a reputable vet now, to try to determine what is going on. After seizures, there are chemistry and lab values that can be checked that will or often do show what precipitated the seizure. As days go by, lab values, etc may return to normal so you may not ever know what caused the initial event.....

I never let my dogs, even grown dogs, run around in other rooms, out of my sight. They can just get into too much trouble, and what one does not think of, another one will! Your baby could have possibly chewed an electric cord? Fell of furniture and hit his head? Ran into a table/chair/couch leg or end table and knocked himself out cold? Fell off furniture and landed on his head, knocking himself senseless?

I hope your little one is back to normal and you dont ever have to see this again.....it is gut wrenching and nerve wracking, to say the least.....

From MAXIMO: "......Want to add -- if your baby does not appear 100% strong and healthy on Friday, do not let the vet give her the vaccinations. Vaccinations are important, but should not be given when the puppy or adult dog is in any kind of health distress."..........
