Sir Baron feeding Hi, my baby Sir Baron is a very healthy 9 year old. I need portion tips for food. He normally eats two boiled chicken tenders and handful of dry food daily. He's was 10 pounds until he was diagnosed Saturday with pancreatitis after four days of diarrhea,he lost 2.5 lbs . He has to eat chicken and rice for two weeks. I'm giving him 2 chicken tenders twice a day. Is that enough to get his weight back up? Vet says give as much as he wants. Really, Lol, he'd eat unto he popped? |

Thank you, I normally do free feed him. If I leave boiled chicken in his bowl to free feed, he would never stop I will try three times a day. |
I don't think he will gain any weight while he is eating boiled chicken and rice, you may have to wait until he is off that diet, chicken in low in calories. If he is being treated for pancreatitis your vet may put him on a prescription dietary dog food. Do you have a vet follow up visit in 2 weeks? If your vet does not put him on this prescription dog food, you should ask your vet about kind of dog food he should be eating. |
Thank you so much. Yes, he has a follow up appointment. Thank you for the insight about weight gain. I would have been disappointed if he didnt gai . |
You know your dog's eating habits WAY better than your vet - that's what you have to guide you in the end. If your dog is always an insatiable eater (like my Wylie)...then you should only hand out so much. So if it were me, I'd hand out way more than usual...but within reason and with limits. |

When I feed chicken and rice, I usually serve almost double the measurement of my boys' regular kibble. The fresh food is lower in calories/fat, so more is required. Max is like Sir Baron and has a bottomless pit for a stomach. Best wishes for your boy. |
