Patella popped out? I have a yorkie that is 2 years old. When we bought her they thought that she may have an issue with her leg but everything has been fine up to now. Yesterday she jumped on the sofa and didn't quite make it and fell. After that, she started limping a bit. She would run and jump but then walk on only 3 legs. Took her to the vet this morning and they said that her patella around the knee is popping in and out. When it is in that is when she can run around ok but then when it pops out it hurts her. She has not wined or cryed. Vet gave her some anti-inflamatory medicine and said if it does not heal to have surgery. I searched the forum for "patella" but most I read seemed more severe than my dog. Does anyone have success with no surgery? |
Yes, I believe there are a lot of yorkies with "low grade" luxating Patellas (LP) who do fine without sugery. I would avoid allowing her to jump up and down on furnitutre and whatever because this tends to aggravate the problem I have heard. I would make or buy steps to the furniture and train her to use these. Good luck. |
My vet told us awhile back that Mojo had slipping knee caps (or something like that), but that we wouldn't need surgery for it...unless it started to cause him pain. He doesn't limp and doesn't hurt when he walks/runs. We can't even tell that anything was wrong, until you feel his legs. I heard that small breed dogs are prone to these problems...maybe it is the distance they jump since they are so small?! Most of our little ones jump from bed to floor or couch to floor, etc. You can search online for making her own steps....I have printed it out somewhere, but it has escaped me right now. They are pretty easy to make. You can also buy them from lots of different companys or maybe search eBay too. They are definitely worth having! |
My Yorkie was diagnosed with this as well, and we give glucosamine/condroitin in pill form. You can find this in any place that sells humans vitamins, they even have it in powder/liquid form for dogs, but I find its more expensive (but may be worth it- if your baby is picky). I like to buy higher quality, not from walmart. We use it for just overall good joint health, it cant hurt. Call your Vet for correct dosage info. Just be sure that if you do use it, to be consistant with it, to see the best result. |
1Ton - Some dogs with mildly luxating patellas do very well - never have any severe problems - and never need surgery. This is just something you have to keep an eye on. You pup may do fine - but if she continues to have problems and the problems become more severe, causing her more discomfort -- you may be looking at surgery. I have known several dogs that have had surgery for this - and are doing very well. Put "Patella" or "Patellas" in search. We just had some posts on this very subject. I think it may have been in the main Yorkie discussion forum. But, anyway there is a lot of information there. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Thank you for everyone's responses. This is my first post and this forum has a lot of nice people and very cute yorkies! My Harley wants to play all the time, jumping up and down, etc. and I am afraid that it won't heal. We have blocked off a hallway for her now so she does not jump too much but constantly wants to play. I hope she does not need surgery. Thanks again for the helpful information. |

Welcome to YT.. Many dogs of ALL breeds and sizes are being diagnosed with LP's. now. They are graded and the higher the number the more likely the dog will be in pain and/or need surgery. Also, the surgery has been perfected and is far more affordable if needed. Do not let the baby get obese. Females should not be bred. And, had running and jumping is not good. When she starts to limp, curtail her activity and ask your vet about meds. The glucosamine/chondroitin is an excellent compound to strengthen the structures of the joint.. |
It is so hard to keep such a hyper pup from jumping up and down. We are trying our best though. The vet have only given her the anti-inflamatory drug. How much does this type of surgery go for? |
