My dogs eye is just not right, please help. 3 Attachment(s) :( Okay so I've always noticed that my yorkie/maltese mix has had a habit of blinking just her right eye at times. With me being the person I am Im so worried because I took a closer look & pulled down her lower eyelid & saw something that just wasn't right, I will attach photos of what I saw. On one of the photos is when I was looking & she looked up & its like that part of flesh just went up & covered some of her eye. I don't know what this could be here are more details - * she went to the vet a few weeks ago, bloodwork came back great * i asked doctor about the white discharge coming from that eye & he said it was normal because of all of her hair getting in the way * she seems to be seeing fine, I can put a finger near her eyes & she reacts to it * she paws at that eye Im just so scared & just typing this makes me cry. |
Hi and welcome to YT :). First, all dogs do have a 3rd eyelid inside the lid which further protects the eye, so that's the covering you saw. If you feel the 3rd lid is acting differently than the other eye, then I would have a vet take a look. Bless you ((hugs)), when you feel something is not right with your baby it turns your world upside down! I doubt it's anything more than irritated or allergies, but I'm not a doctor by no means. Since your baby just had a check up and everything came back great try not to worry. If I was not satisfied with the vets assessment of the eye I would not hesitate to go get a second opinion from another doctor, it will put your mind at rest if nothing else. With the 3rd eyelid protruding, and the pawing, and the thick discharge . . . I would make an appointment with an ophthalmologist. Max had several corneal ulcers (a hole in the thin, clear outer layer of the eye) that were caused by a number of factors. His third eyelid popped out once when his eye was severely inflamed. Your vet may be right that your baby's eye is reacting to hair in the eye, but I would want more reassurance that there isn't an infection, a scratch or an ulcer, or other foreign material in the eye. |
Did your vet stain the eye to look for any ulcerations? I probably would do what was suggested by Maximo and get a second opinion from either another vet or an ophthalmologist. I went through something similar a couple of weeks ago. My Rookie had the same symptoms. The vet stained it and no ulcerations. She thought it was from his hair or from allergies and advised Benadryl which did basically nothing over a weekend. Made an appointment with another vet in the office and she prescribed antibiotic eye ointment and it is doing so much better. |

It could be as simple as an inverted eyelash.....but it needs to be seen and attended to. Everytime he blinks, whatever it is, is scratching his eye ball, and you can just imagine how uncomfortable that is! |
You might not need a specialist, but maybe just a second opinion as suggested above. The hard part is finding the right vet. We were just lucky that our vet had worked trauma for a few years before general practice and had advanced training in eye issues. But even he said that if Max had anymore eye trouble, it was time for the specialist. It's hit or miss with regular vets whether they know enough about eye issues. You might save a lot of agony and money by just going to the specialist. |
