Recurrent pancreatitis in diabetic dog My sweet 7 yo Prince was diagnosed with diabetes this summer and the vet thinks it is from frequent bouts of pancreatitis. His blood sugar is all over the place requiring a few hospitalizations. If he doesn't eat in the morning, I can't give him his insulin and I am anxious about that. Then I'm gone all day. If he doesn't eat well at night, he also can't get his insulin. He sometimes is great one day, eating well, playing, etc and the next day he's acting like he doesn't feel well and won't eat. I think the vet is also tiring of seeing us so often! He's on Science Diet ID and doesn't get treats, table food etc. So sad, frustrating, exhausting to see him not feeling well and unsure what to do. (He also has frequent diarrhea with these episodes). Vet bills are also adding up. Any advice?? |
dog My spud had pancreatitis and he is on the hills zd diet. I wonder why the id and not the zd. Check it out maybe the zd would be a better choice for you to use. |
Food Have you tried the Hills ID Low Fat? Both the regular ID and ZD are higher fat content I believe. Low fat is better for pancreatitis. You could try the ID Low Fat canned either alone or mixed with kibble and he may eat that. Or even add some low fat boiled chicken breast and rice? Hope you can get him to eat somehow so he will feel better. He may have nausea and then the vet may prescribe Cerenia to prevent that? |
Sounds to me like a specialist is in order. While initially the cost might seem like a lot, often they can get to the bottom of things quicker and in the end save money. I would not advise you on the food...you have a pup with pancreatitis and diabetes and he needs a very careful diet. Personally, I would, at some point, probably do a nutrition consult....BUT first things first. Try a specialist .... or a vet school if there is one close to you??? You can find an internal medicine specialist here: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home Look for SAIM (small animal internal medicine) Please keep us posted. |
Thanks, I will look into that. |
Thanks for all of the advice. I don't know if his food is low fat or not but I will check it out. He does have cerenia and I gave it to him this morning. His vet also put him on metroniazole which I gave him last night and this morning. About an hour after his meds, he did eat about 1/4 cup of his canned id food and hasn't vomited or had diarrhea. Lady Jane, there are no vet schools near me. This group of vets works with each other and will often consult with each other. |

Pancreatitis etc Thanks for the update. So glad to hear your baby is eating and hopefully keeping the food down so far. The meds are also probably helping him. The Hills web site gives all the info on nutrients etc. I have found that my dog will usually eat the Canned ID when all else is rejected. Hope he continues to thrive and stay well. |
Tinkerbell has pancreatitis and addition to Insulinoma (cancer that causes low blood sugar, opposite of diabetes). She was on Royal Canin Low Fat, then started being picky so we switched to Hills I/D. However, since she has to eat every 4 hours I coax her with some chicken breast (she prefers it cooked in the crock pot). Maybe if you have problems with getting your baby to eat you could use chicken as well? Best of luck, pancreatitis takes a lot of work. |
