Prednisone and Convenia Husband took our little YorkiePoo, Bella, to the vet for chronic chewing and itching. No fleas, no anal gland issues, nothing seen on skin. Tested negative for ova and parasites. Vet gave a Convenia Injection, A Prednisolone 50Mg injection and prescribed Prednisone 5 mg for a couple days in decreasing doses. Also a TrixChlor spray. Prescribed Benedry or Zyrtec after the course of Prednisone is finished. Bells seems lethargic. I am hesitant to give her the Prednisone and worry that the combination or the injections separately or together have caused the issue. She is just laying there...it's one day after the visit and she's had 1 little pill. Can I just stop? Is being lethargic normal for these drugs? Are they dangerous? It says don't stop abruptly...Id rather an OTC drug if the others are too strong or this is a bad reaction. |
I honestly don't think either of these meds would cause lethargy. I have used both for a number of pups with no ill effects. The Convenia could cause GI issues as could the prednisone. The prednisone would be more likely to cause her to be more active. Maybe she is just resting since it sounds like she was really itchy prior to the meds? They also should not be a problem when given together. You really should call the vet about this to be on the safe side. Since it is evening, I don't think any harm would come to her if you hold the dose and call the vet in the morning. |
Thanks I will do that... I hope she's not having a bad reaction. She's very sensitive to her vaccines so any meds worry me. |

is so easy since it is just one injection as opposed to 10 days of pills. |
No, I would not stop these meds...not at all. Like Lj said, the lethargy isn't likely from these meds...unless her tummy is a bit bothered and it's making her tired from that. But even so, I wouldn't stop the meds for that reason. Btw, allergies in dogs are rarely helped by Benadryl (have to give 4x a day) or Zyrtec (give once a day).
