Just got the Diabetes diagnosis My Tucker has been getting more lethargic over the past week. This past weekend he was quite ill with diarrhea and becoming shaking on his feet so off we went to the vet today. Got the call this afternoon that he has really high blood sugar. He has also lost 2 lbs since his check up in July. They have kept Tucker to start an IV and start the insulin administration. He will be there for a couple days till they can get his numbers down. The vet confirmed that his cataracts had gotten worse also but I am sure this is related to the elevated blood sugar. I had convinced myself he had hypothyroid or cushing's disease. I guess I can manage the diabetes diagnosis and treatment plan. I am a RN so giving insulin won't be an issue. I have been reading up on management and see that many do twice daily blood sugar testing with a glucometer. We will figure that out to. Anyone out there have any tips and experience? |
Hi and welcome to YT :). So sorry your baby is ill - but he sounds like he is in great hands! We have many members who've had to deal w/ diabetes, so hopefully they'll chime in. Why were you thinking hypothy and Cushings? My Wylie has both of those. And, btw, many dogs who have Cushings also have diabetes too...so you could be on to something. |
Thanks for the welcome. I was only thinking hypo and/or cushings based on reading. I went and visited Tucker yesterday and talked with my vet. Tucker does have pancreatitis which she believes goes hand in hand with newly diabetes. She actually has a wolfhound in the clinic with the same issues as my Tucker (both came in the same day). Tucker was way more perkier yesterday and happy to see me. Earlier in the day, he still had a couple sessions of bloody diarrhea but nothing all afternoon. They got his sugars down; 38 on admission, 28 yesterday morning, 12 by noon (these are the Canadian measurements). He is eating and drinking on his own so hopefully we are heading in the right direction. Bev |
I agree, it sounds like he is in capable hands. I am sure others who have more experience will chime in. Welcome to YT! Please keep us posted on how he is doing! |
The vet called this morning. His blood sugar was at 19 this morning so they increased his insulin a little bit. No more nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. We might be able bring him home tomorrow. |

I don't know about Canada, but here in the U.S. I get my testing supplies at Wal-Mart. Do you use the same meters for puppies as you do with humans? Wishing you and your baby great success. |
I am sure Walmart up here sells the testing stuff as they have a full pharmacy here. We haven't discussed with the vet what I will have to do once Tucker is home other than I know I will have to do twice daily insulin. We went to see him yesterday afternoon…he looks really good and was not happy to be left there. Hopefully today, I can bring him home. |
Just wanted to update everyone…Tucker is home. A happy little mischievous yorkie. He is on 2 units insulin twice daily and will go back in 2 weeks for another blood sugar curve. He is also on one of the gastro wet food for at least 2 weeks as he still needs to recover from the pancreatitis. Just happy to have him home with his wiggly bum :) |
Great news! I am sure he is happy to be home! :) |
