Please help, Need Advice on My Baby Hi all. King is a 7 year old adorable Yorkie. He is about 8 pounds and has been in good health. In the last two weeks he has been doing strange sounds. Our of the blue he will make a screeching sound and jump as if he was startled or stepped on. He jolts away for a second and then comes back as if nothing happened. It happens completely without provocation from us. He has been more needy and wanting to be held/cuddled than normal. I picked him up and gently rubbed him all over to see if there was any sensitive spots or sore areas, nothing was found. The incidents are happening sometimes once a day up to two. I am unsure of what to do. I can't attribute it to anything. His food hasn't changed. I am asking if anyone else has had this happen or have any idea on what I can do for him. Please respond with any ideas or information if you have also experienced this. Thanks so much! |
Have his bowel movements/stool changed characteristics? Constipation often causes this behavior....they get little cramps just like we do, and they have no idea what that little cramp is.....also, difficulty having a bowel movement, a hard stool they just cant get out, and the gas pains that accompany such an issue will often cause that "jumping, skittish behavior" because they can not figure what that little cramp or gas pain rolling around inside of them, actually is. This COULD be a source of the problem behavior. This is so worrisome for you, I know...trying to second guess strange, unknown behavior in our babies, who can not talk and tell us what in the world is bothering them. If it were me, I would watch your baby closely, watch for bowel changes.....he may have glands that need emptying.....if I saw no improvement in his behavior, I would have the vet check him out......of course, here we are at the weekend!!......maybe clean out his glands.....watch stool consistency, frequency, maybe check him for UTI, doing urine culture/sensitivity.... |
Poor King. I understand is frustrating when you cannot pinpoint what could possibly be wrong. Is he sleeping when he makes these unusual sounds, or wide awake? When my Max became very needy and was behaving unusually, I discovered he had a corneal eye ulcer. His first one was difficult to detect because he didn't have any redness and he wasn't holding his eye closed. Just to rule out anything eye related: any chance King puts his paw near his eye before he yelps? |
Have you had his anal glands checked lately ? |
Thanks for your replies! 1 Attachment(s) So, thank you all for your quick responses. King is awake when he does this noise screech thing. He doesn't seem to have any eye issues that we can take notice of. His bowel movements are like clockwork and they are typical of his normal poos. He hasn't had any other real noticeable issues other than this needy clingy thing, which we don't mind at all, and this horrible screeching noise. It is almost like he scares himself when he does it. He runs for a sec when it happens, then comes back like nothing is wrong. I will check the anal glands but he was just groomed not too long ago. I am so worried about him. |
how is your beautiful boy today? perhaps a vet check would put your mind at ease? |
Honestly, I would get this little one to the Vet ASAP -- and have an xray done of his neck and back -- this could be nerve/disc pain. In any case, there is something going on here that sounds quite excruciating for him and he needs to really be checked out thoroughly. |
All I can offer is that the one time Maggie acted really strange it turned out to be her back. She had been very quiet and tried to hide in places she had never been before. It was clear something was wrong, but I couldn't find anything. The vet checked her all out and it seemed she was fine, then he sort of ran his hands down both sides of her, feeling her spine I think and when he got to her hips she tried to bite him. He said, "it's her back". Gave her some pills, Rimadyl I think, and she was fine the next day or two later. My point is that if you don't touch, look, or listen to the right thing, you might miss it, but something could be wrong. It was clear as day when he pushed the part that was hurting her. She has never before, or since, tried to nip at anybody (not counting the chewing on your hand as a puppy) If it happens again, off to the vet you should go. |
