Won't jump My 4 year old female has been acting strangely today. She is lethargic and keeps going to her bed. She will not walk up the stairs to come back inside. She will walk down them and even chased a squirrel earlier. She will not jump up on the furniture at all. She will stand up and put her paws on the edge, but won't jump. She is eating, drinking and has gone potty. I have rubbed her head to toe and haven't found anything odd. Any ideas? |
Sounds like she has something going on with her hips or back??? Im not a vet so I would take her in to be examined. Did she jump off of something? |
I agree....sounds like something pulled, sprained or strained....but you NEED a diagnosis, so you know what you are dealing with....otherwise, it is all just a guess. And a guess is not what you want going on if it is a pinched nerve that could be loosing blood supply....that could easily be a permanent damage thing..... |
Thanks Thank you both. She jumps up and down all the time. She loves to jump. She is 14 lbs so she is a bigger girl. I plan to take her in tomorrow, when our vet opens again, if I don't see a large change through the day. I can tell something isn't right, but she just isn't giving me a clearcut symptom. 😞 |
I have always had larger yorkies, from 9 lbs to 17 lbs, my adopted boy is 12 lbs, when he jumps there's a loud thud, that's a lot of weight on their hips and knees jumping down. Your baby not wanting to jump to me sounds like something is going on there, I would deff. have it checked out. This new boy of mine jumps like a kangaroo, and jumps high. I stop him immediately as he comes down hard on his hind legs with his12 lbs. I know he will blow out his hips with his weight. |
Better Thank you all for your comments. I took her to the vet Monday morning and she had hurt her back. She has some medicine and instructions to stop jumping for a month. Well, that has gone over like a leas brick! Once the meds kicked in, she is a hoppy little girl again. |

I am glad you got her to the vet and found out the reason for her not wanting to jump was because she hurt her back. I hope she will be on the mend with the meds she was given. You said she is hopping around. I hope you are not allowing this to go on as if she does her back will not heal and will get worse. I know the meds must be making her feel like her old self but she is not yet. |
Happy to see you took your baby to the vet, it's very hard keeping these yorkies calm, but, this is a must do for that injury to heal. I would not let her run or jump, give the meds the time they need for a complete recovery. |
As Joan said you MUST keep her calm for her to heal. Cage her if you have to. It will be difficult listening to her cry to be let out but if you allow her to jump at all you will at the very least prolong her healing and at the worst cause her more injury. I am speaking from experience because I did not listen to the vet and let Max have too much freedom when he broke 2 bones in his foot and he is not fully healed yet because of this. We are lucky because he is expected to make a full recovery so learn from my mistakes and dole out some tough love for a short period of time. We'll keep you in our prayers. |
