Broken Leg Hi, my name is Barb and I have a yorkie that is a little over 14 years. She is my baby! She fell down the stairs early Tuesday morning. Her left back leg was dangling, of course she didn't seem to be in any pain. Got a vet appointment right away and my vet took xrays, said it was definitely broken. She got me into an Orthopedic surgeon. They kept her on Tuesday to prep her for surgery, as she had broken her leg in two places. Poor baby! She had surgery on Wednesday, they had to put pins and screws to fix the breaks. I brought her home on Thursday. She is on Tramadol and Clavamox. The question I have is she was on Proin to manage urinary incontinence. I took her off the Proin since she has been on the other meds, but she is not holding her bladder at all. She is waking up full of urine. Does anyone know if it is ok to have her on Tramadol, Clavamox and Proin? Other than her peeing in her sleep, she is doing great on the 5th day after surgery. |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! So sorry to hear your little one got hurt, but glad she is on the mend. Did the vet ask you to stop the Proin? If not, I would not stop it at all just bc some other add'l meds are needed. If it were me, I'd put a quick call in to the vet office to ask about any contraindications btwn Proin, Tramadol, and Clavamox. |

Your poor baby girl! Glad to hear surgery went smoothly and that she is doing well other than the incontinence. I agree with Ann to put a call into the vet about the meds. Sometimes anesthesia can cause incontinence for a couple days after surgery. Maybe the pain med and antibiotic are affecting her too? |
Thank you all. Spoke to the vet yesterday and was able to give her the Proin again. I swear that is a miracle drug. We had a dry night last night! Now, if only I can make her stay down. She just won't lay down in the crate. She stands on her leg but doesn't put that much weight on it. When I let her out to go pee, even on leash, she wants to run. This is hardest part of the recovery, keeping her calm. |

Happy to hear you were able to talk to the vet and had a dry night. |
BHILL0821 my dog broke its leg Hi Barb! Hi Barb YES, definitely give your dog Proin and Clavamox (they are often used together) and Tramadol is for pain, a very good pain narcotic. So so sorry about your baby breaking its leg. The Vets sell these little outfits when they have surgery or break a leg. It keeps them snug as a bug. And they can't bite at it when healing. Make sure to keep the urine away from her leg as urine can burn! Love, Susan Marie and Roxie |
I know from experience the difficulty of trying to keep them down. Max has been in a cast for 7 weeks with 2 broken metacarpals. They don't understand that they need the rest. They just want to play, even if they only have 3 good legs. |
Ok, Crystal has been in good spirits the last couple of days. I am letting her walk more on it as she is putting more weight on that leg. She is limping today, so do you think she has been walking to much on it? No jumping or running, just walking.. Thanks for any advice, she has been my super baby at 14+ years. :) |
