Seizure Meds/Side Effects Hi, My baby of 13 years was diagnosed with rare partial seizures. He was put on anti seizure meds and has been so drunk and stumbling.My vet even decreased the dosage behind my neurologists back from 0.7 to 0.4 ml and he is still walking into walls..Anyone have any experience with meds like this and how long before they adjust..oh and he pees in house due to a combo of the meds and increased thirst and urination.. |

Anti-seizure meds are generally notorious for some pretty hefty side effects -- BUT -- those often subside w/ time and patience. Try to stick with this dose for a bit if you can, but if it appears dangerous (running into walls etc), then see if it's viable to decrease it yet again, knowing you'll have to probably ramp up again later as tolerance to the med gets better. Hang in there, and try not to worry too much about this concerning side effect...I know, easier said than done. |
The newer drugs don't have the side effects of the older ones. My dog takes zonisamide and has been on it for almost 5 years and we haven't had any side effects or problems. You could ask to try that one instead but keppra is pretty mild too from what I understand. Perhaps your dog really does need an MRI and spinal tap. |
Also I wouldn't be having my general vet override the neurologist's dosing. You should work with the neurologist on this who has much more expertise than a general vet. |
Thx to all..I hope I am not jinxing myself but my Rex seemed to be more himself this morning..Slept 8 hours woke and peed had breakfast and played for 20mins! Hoping he is adjusting..praying |
5 years ago my dog, Max was on phenobarbital. He was a total mess! It took a few weeks for him to adjust to the meds and eventually he went back to normal behavior. He was very wobbly too. |
Hi, I hope your dog is doing better. What are rare partial seizures? My Yorkie started having seizures at 4.5 yrs old - in November he will be 10. I have only treated him holistically - Chinese herbs, homeopathic treatments, laser treatments, chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture. He does amazingly well. We tested him for a million things but I never took him to a neurologist as I did not want to put him on conventional meds as we believe he has some interior shunting and did not want to cause further damage to his liver. I also home cook for him and careful about treats. My two vets that do acupuncture learned a new technique and its is amazing - really recommend chiro and acupuncture as a complemetery treatment. |
This sort of stuff is common with these meds. My chihuahua takes phenobarbitol twice daily and we were warned by the vet to expect him to be sick at first, very sleepy, lethargic, and maybe confused. I was lucky and he escaped too many side effects. He did gain a bit of weight and it has been a massive, ongoing issue with his weight. He is on a diet constantly and I watch his calories religiously. I really hope your guy gets better. Try to stick it out if you can, as his body adjusts he will do better. Put in a call to the neurologist if you're concerned. |
