was just told my baby needs to be on insulin I haven't been on for a long time, but I know that I can find a lot of comfort knowing that other yorkietalkers are going through the same problem I have been. Mia just turned 6 on Monday and has always been a chubby dog weighing 19 pounds up to about 6 months ago. she was put on a low fat diet (hills I/d) and did lose some weight. she was down to 15 pounds and looked great. In June, she started to wet herself in her sleep and so I took her to vet and she had a UTI and was given antibiotics, but I was told that her sugar levels were abnormally high but that they would recheck in a couple weeks. but they I noticed that it was getting worse. dropped her off this morning for blood tests because she just hasn't been herself and was told that her levels were at 593 so she's going to be put on insulin. when I go pick her up, he will be instructing me on what to do, but I'm so scared of having to inject her. I mean, does this process get easy? :confused: then to top it off, my other baby Kobe has an enlarged heart and a murmur. he's on medications for life too. |
So sorry to read that you are dealing with health issues with your two Yorkies. I hope that once you get used to giving the insulin that it will get easier for you to give the shots. Plus knowing that you are giving quality care to your babies will give you an emotional boost. Hopefully people who have dealt with these issues can give you advice so all I can add is my best wishes and support to you and prayers for your two Yorkies. |
I have read that being a diabetic can be100% controlled in humans so I am hoping it is the same in dogs. You will have a tough path to walk with her but with your help she can live a long and happy life. My prayers are with you. |
Sorry to hear this but you can do whatever is necessary as you are a good mommy and her health is important to you. It will become a daily routine that is necessary for her to live.....don't know about the easy part but I know you and she can do this, it will become second nature and less stressful. My dog was also on insulin. It's hard to inject them because it's painful for them. You have to reassure them every time. My dog has become aggressive but now he's fine and healthy now. Australian Simplified Messaging Service |
I start all my 8 week old babies on the vaccinations, which is an injection, "a shot", right over the shoulder area like in the scruff of the neck. The needle used is 1 inch long....I have NEVER had a baby yelp or cry out in pain from these shots. The insulin shot you will be giving, is given with a needle that is maybe 1/2 inch long and thinner than the lead in a mechanical pencil.....your dog may not be willing to sit still while you do this.....assistance from another person is a wonderful thing but is totally not necessary......your pup will do fine.....after each injection, ask your vet if you can give her a tiny treat of some kind....or do something REALLY special that she thoroughly enjoys, and she will be completely fine! This is no step for a stepper! There is no pain involved! |
My little jack russell terrier is diabetic . She was 6 when it happened. She has been getting 2shots a day for 3 years. I give them in the scruff of the neck . She stands up on the table and I give her the shot and then she gets to eat her breakfast. She only has to have a blood curve if anything about her changes. At first she had one every month ,then 3 months and now only once a year. She has had to have her insulin upped twice but not that much. She is doing very well except she has gone blind from the diabetes. Good luck to you and I know it will work out for you. |
