Puppy not doing well. My grandmother got her baby yorkie last week. (No I'm not positive about the breeder before that question gets asked :). I'm questioning them myself!!) she had been sent pictures and was told she was small but we were shocked at how small she actually is. She is 1lb and we were told 10 weeks. Unfortunately the vet thinks 6 weeks, which is where I believe her problems start. She is not eating, has diarrhea on and off, vomits occasional, and has had low blood sugar. Vet has cleared her for everything except digestive deformations. In my opinion she was not weened completely. My grandmother is beside herself worried about her little baby. One if the worst things is she doesn't want to eat. The vet gave emergency food (soft tube), calorie and vitamin tube, and said to try those which she wants nothing to do with. I've read to put her on puppy milk replacer, but the vet warned that can cause diarrhea. I've also read to use a natural food like newmans own and blend with water to put in syringe if need be. Keep puppy warm and if possible held. Please any advice would be appreciated. Any of the above things would work, or not work. Thanks in advance. |
Sorry your GM is going thru this. Did you get papers with her where it shows the birth date if the breeder was reputable? First have you contact the breeder? Also was she tested for liver shunt and have a complete blood work up before your GM bought her? I don't know how old a Yorkie has to be to be checked for Liver Shunt, but there are certain things that have to be done - like eating something special and waiting a time period before the test can be conducted. - (not sure on all the details) Do you have anything that will enhance her food and make sure she takes liquids, even if you have to put some honey and water in a syringe and give it to her that way. Also would have her back at the vet on Monday. - Just my 2 cents worth. - Good Luck !!!!! |
I am sorry but I would return this baby to this "breeder" before it dies on you, after having spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills.... If you decide to continue down this path of heartbreak, start this baby on Royal Canin puppy mousse, eaten off the tip of your finger. If the puppy will not eat, you are in some deep ......you can try milk formula, First Born Puppy Milk... 8oz First Born 4oz Pedialyte 1 raw egg yolk 1/2 cup Kefir Milk or cultured yogurt 1 tbsp Vi-Daylin Pediatric Vitamin drops Mix this formula up well and then you put 1oz of the formula into a saucer, with 1 heaping tblsp RC puppy mousse.stir this up and let this baby lick this off your fingers.....you are going to have to teach this baby to eat from a saucer....if the baby will not eat from a saucer or lick it from your finger tips, you are going to have to get a 10cc syringe and suck this mixture up in the syringe, and squirt the mixture, a dab at a time, into the back corner of the babys mouth......this baby has got to be fed at least every 3 hours all day long and over night until you get some age on this baby. You can also get Gerber chicken baby food and feed this to the baby....let pup lick it off fingers, then move down to saucer....this is in addition to the formula above....good luck with this poor baby.... I would feed the pup, put it down for a nap, then take a 2 x 4 board, and go "talk" to that "breeder" for doing this to y'all....not to mention the baby...... |
Thank you so much for your replies!!! I know there is no way she would return the baby now. She is so upset with herself for trusting this so called breeder! I wish I had helped her with that!!!!! I would like to try the formula. I assume it is better than the store bought alone? I've also asked my Gma if she would let me help since the baby needs round the clock care. Do you think this would cause any kind of bonding issues? |
Please keep us updated on this baby. Yorkiemom1 hit it right on the head....in all of the advice, including the ' board of knowledge'. |
praying this little makes it, do whatever you can if she does not want to return it to the breeder, good luck |

Wishing you much luck with this - yorkiemom1 knows what she is talking about!!! |
Follow yorkiemom's instructions....it's the best hope for this little baby. If she won't eat willingly it has to be done for her. I had to do it with my 13 yr old husky recently....and I'm glad I did. I hope all the best for you, your G-Mom and the pup! |

No problems....you are facing a lot more catastrophic issues than bonding, if this baby is not started on an intensive care routine.... |
OP, yorkiemom1 is a trusted breeder, follow her advise, this baby has to eat to live. I understand GM not wanting to return the baby, I would do the same thing, help the baby to live. Forget the bonding issue, issue at hand is that the baby eat. Good luck and PLEASE keep us up-dated on the puppy, everyone on YT gets worried and concerned when we see a puppy in distress. |
Good news is my GMA has agreed to let me help. I'm picking up supplies and puppy today. Thank you all so much. I will keep you posted. |
Ok I found everything except the vi-daylin and the first born formula. Is the first born the same as just born from petco? Best I could find for now is the GNC brand. I got the goats milk. I'll gladly get whichever brand you suggest but I need to find it LOL. So far the first feeding with the formula (minus vi-dayLin drops) has gone well and she is napping. Wishing I could have that "board talk" now. She didn't want to take much and I figured with the trip here (little over an hour) I would let her go since she did eat and hold down what I gave her. I'm also wondering if they were over feeding her using a dropper which caused her to vomit from overeating (human baby knowledge lol). Thank you again! |
Way to go! Hang with Yorkiemom1, she knows what she is talking about. Sending strength and hugs for this little one! Bless you for being willing to go the distance for this pup - you are the best! |

Yes!! I had my patio cover almost fall down this afternoon....30 feet by 12 feet pergola.....so my brain is miss-firing a little! Just Born is correct! Be very careful feeding with a dropper....pup can EASILY aspirate and end up with milk in its lungs = aspiration pneumonia! Small frequent feedings is much better than too much at one time, because of the aspiration issue...... Great with your first feeding! They love the taste of the formula....did she lick it from a saucer....start with a saucer because she has no concept of "DEPTH", like depth of a bowl...her little tongue will go along the saucer and she can learn how to lick up from that.....try the solid mousse mixed with a little of the formula and see how pup does...all new so may take a few times...she may just lick that mousse off your finger tip....work real hard to teach her to LICK the formula from a saucer... You can put her on your shoulder after you feed her and burp her just like a baby, gently patting her little back.....that will help keep the feeding down..... |
Hope everything's ok with your patio Yorkiemom1!! Was it a storm? The feedings went ok. She shows absolutely no interest in eating. Not even at the RC mousse. But she will lick once the dropper puts it in her mouth. I would love to get away from the dropper because that does scare me a little. I'll pick up the just born tomorrow but do you know what vitamin drops to use instead of the vi-faylin? I found d-vi-sol and poly-vi-sol. Oh and the burps are the cutest!!! Couple other questions how often should I feed her? And does she need to be drinking a whole lot since she is getting the formula? She is drinking just not a lot. Thank you so so much!!!!!!!!! |

Had to go to 24 hour emergency vet. Baby is lethargic and pulling head back. They are keeping her until morning on IV's. Said she was severely anemic and basically 0 blood sugar. Vet said there is some underlying issue as to her blood sugar dropping. Basically he said she has no immune system and "some puppies just aren't meant to make it" :( So pray she makes it thru the night!!!! |
I'm so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I'm thinking of you and the poor puppy. I pray that the puppy pulls through. Let us know how everything goes. You are an angel for doing everything you can to save the puppies life. I'm sure your grandma appreciates it too because it is sad having a very sick puppy. |
Well bad news!! Baby Lizzy made it at the ER and to my vet. However my vet says he believes she is 10 weeks old because of her teeth. However she has the soft spot on her head that hasn't closed, and believes she is having severe liver problems. Either the liver shunt issue or deformed liver. This has caused her stunted growth he believes. Unfortunately she is currently under 1lb and he doesn't think she could make it through surgery:( Thank you all SO SO much for your help. She is home with me know but as soon as she starts going back downhill I'm going to have to take her back to be put down. Our family is so sad but honestly after caring for her myself she wasn't functioning at all :( |
I am praying that lil Lizzy can beat this. But know, you have done all you can to help this baby, she is in GODs hands now (((hugs))) |
This is the kind of event that absolutely infuriates me!! Your poor momma bought a puppy and this is what she was sold....a heartache looking for a place to happen....and that does not even address the poor unfortunate puppy. You all did all you could do....if this had been a healthy baby, you would have had a chance....you did the absolute best you could do with the hand you were dealt. I cant remember the circumstances that led to your momma getting this poor unfortunate baby.....who she got it from, where she got it from....you need to address this with the person that is responsible for producing this innocent, sick little baby. This is the ultimate inhumane thing a "breeder" can do....First: charge blindly into breeding when they obviously do not know what they are doing.....Second: Pam a sick/dying baby off on a person that is all excited and in love with this innocent little bundle of puppiness, only to watch it die, much wasted time, effort, and money spent, trying to save its precious little life.... While THEY do not know it and probably do not even care, God has a very special place for these thieves...(and that is all they are)....thieves that steal the lives of innocent babies, thieves that rob people of $$$, peddling sick puppies to unsuspecting buyers, thieves that rob people of the joy in their hearts when this little precious baby dies on them...... Contact the breeder....try to make this right for your momma and the precious, innocent little baby thrown into this situation. |
Thank you all so much!! I so greatful that I got on this message board. You all were right!! Everyone was helpful!!!! We lost a tiny little baby who never had a chance and Yorkiemom1 couldn't be more right about this so called "breeder". Hopefully IF or when my Gma decides to get a Yorkie she will let me help find a breeder OR adopt a Yorkie from a rescue. Again THANK YOU ALL!!! I also tried to post a picture of Lizzy but the file was too big :( |
Such a sad event and you did all you could why can't people just leave breeding to the experts instead of just trying to make money, your poor family having to go through all of this and the poor little mite of a puppy with no chance, how ver sad. |
I am so, so sorry. I, too, had a sick puppy and had to deal with the heartbreak and helpless feeling of watching her fade while the vet bills piled up. I am sure she felt your grandma's love in the short time she spent with her. You did everything you could! |
Go confront the breeder she got her from. And if you can't come to an agreement or whatever, post every single thing you know about them (description, where they are located, what they drove if they delivered, name, phone number, EVERY SINGLE THING that someone else could use to recognize this person before they walk blindly into the same trap) on Craigslist or in the paper. Don't just brush it under the rug and move on. That's what they expect you to do and it enables them to continue breeding and breaking people's hearts for money. Don't make it easy on them. That's just my thoughts on it. I'm so sorry for your and your grandmas heartache over this little angel. |
