Need Help! Skin Scratching, Bleeding, Hairloss, etc.

Hello All,

I have an almost 10 year old female yorkie who has always had skin issues, but this is the worst I've seen yet. She is full bred but has always been almost all white in color with some silver.

I have taken her to about a half dozen different vets over the years and all have treated her for seborrhea with these various treatments: atopica, steroids, epi-sooth shampoo, resi-cort conditioner, duoxo skin spray, and probably some others I can't recall right now.

Lately she has been so miserable constantly scratching herself bloody and raw, especially under her front legs, face, and back. The texture of her skin has now darkened and become like leather in some areas. She also chews her paws to the point where they are too sensitive to touch and bright red. I have spent so much money on vets and have not seen any decent results. I hate seeing her like this and don't know what else to do. I would be interested in any vet specialist suggestions or treatment suggestions. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome to YT :). I'm so very sorry your girl is suffering like this, my gosh, how miserable for both of you!

A few things...what happened w/ Atopica...usually that works wonderfully. Have you tried Apoquel yet? What happened also when you used steroid?

To me, this looks like pyoderma, which is an overgrowth of staph intermedius on the skin...it is diagnosed via a very simple skin smear...then treated w/ Simplicef x 30 days. Has that ever been done.

The other thing you should look at since these are recurrent is Cushings Disease - read this overview and see if it fits: Cushings (Hyperadrenocorticism)

Agree with all above....my brother had a beagle that he was flying a skin specialist vet from Dallas to Houston to provide care for his beagle....poor Sparky was sooooooooo miserable and his skin was in deplorable condition, itching, oozing, he was a hot mess. It cost him a fortune, but he adored Sparky, and that dermatologist finally got poor Sparky where he at least was able to tolerate his severe allergies to grass/fleas/chiggers/various tree and flower pollens......Sparky's condition was a direct result of poor breeding, which we were completely ignorant about.

I would highly recommend you get with a specialized dermatologist vet that deals strictly with skin conditions/allergies.....these poor unfortunate dogs can be absolutely miserable with these skin conditions, as we wring our hands and even cry over watching them in their misery.....hang with it....I would skip over alny vet that is NOT a specialist in skin conditions.....I think thay will save you wasted money while you "try this" now "try that"....

They seem to come out of no where. In addition to her treatment I've tried home cooking for a few years and changing household cleaning supplies as well. This is the worst she's ever been. Even at her best, her skin texture and fur does not seem to come back. When she was on the steroid it would help, but the symptoms were not this severe. She was eventually switched from Temaril-P to Atopica because of the long term side affects. She has had a few skin scrapes in the past and been put on various antibiotics, but is never 100 percent. She has been on the same regime for awhile so I'm not familiar with Apoguel. You have given me a lot of info that I will research this evening. Thank you again so much...I really hate seeing her suffer like this.

Thank you for your comments. She is such a wonderful dog and I hate seeing her like this. Due to her abnormal coloring and sensitivity, we have often thought that her issues are due to poor breeding as well. I am going to look into a specialist and hopefully get her to state where she is at least comfortable in her own skin.

Since her fur "doesn't come back", this would also make me be suspect of Cushings. I would *really* suggest you get the Cortisol Creatinine Ratio Urine Test to start down the path of Cushings testing...

We have an appointment with a dermatologist today so I will mention everything that was suggested here! Thanks again for all of your input!
