I feel so helpless My baby had his eye sewn shut yesterday because a cat scratched his eye. Now he's in pain and trying every way possible to scratch his eye. Right now he has the "Collar of Shame" protecting his eye from his paws. But every now and then he'll slip out of it and will go for his eye. I'm scared that he might injure his eye more. I don't know what to do. The vet prescribed him some pain medication. But I feel like it wares off too quickly. |
I am so sorry for you and little Danny having been there with my Max. Must be twice as hard with a puppy. I held Max for hours and massaged him to soothe him, fighting my tears, talking gently to him. He had pain meds too, but I'm sorry to say that it is a very painful condition. I wish that I could fast forward the days for you. Hang in there. Did the vet recommend which saline to use? |

It's so hard to see him in pain. Earlier my mom called while I was at working telling me to get home. Danny had slipped off his cone and was trying to scratch his eye. She was trying so hard to keep his paws away from his eye. He really scared the both of us. All I could do was hold him closely and tell him how much I love him and that I was sorry for not protecting him. |
You can always call your vet's office for clarification on the saline and other concerns. They should be more than willing to help with things like that over the phone. Just keep telling yourself that this will pass and keep soothing your little guy. You both are in my thoughts and prayers. |
I would suggest putting tape around that collar....I hhave never had to use one so I do not know how they fasten....you MUST keep him away from that eye..... Next, call your vet and ask if you can increase the pain medication or else give him something else...my vet always gives me Torbutrol in Vitamino, and this stuff works GREAT! My last momma that had dental work done and spayed, was given .5cc by mouth, every 4-6 hours....that controlled her pain very effectively....she weighed 9 lbs at that time...., without knocking her into a stupor....I use it on all my dogs for whenever they have an issue with pain....dosage is adjusted for effective control according to each of their weights.. They do not get sick from it, it is easy to give and it works. I think it is ridiculous that baby is clawing at his eye, tearing his collar off, insist your vet control that behavior.....he is hurting and miserable....he is going to do major harm to that eye if something isnt done to control his pain. |
When you are holding him can you kind of wrap a t-shirt or little blanket around his little body to keep his front paws confined and away from his face? It sounds kind of mean but I have had to do that to put in eye drops or ear drops. Yesterday I suggested you ask your vet about using Refresh tears but I think that is just a lubricating drop, and not saline. I think saline is the contact solution like you said. I would check with the vet to be sure before putting anything in his little eyes. Maybe a different type of cone collar would work better? I wish you luck, I know this is so hard for you and baby Danny. |

I actually called the vet this morning. But I didn't get a clarification. This time around she just said eye solution. I also asked what I could do to help calm the itching but she didn't have an answer for that other than he's gonna have to deal with the itching until it's healed. |

I would use saline solution for people that wear contact lenses. So sorry you are having to go through this. |

Oh poor baby! I got a bad cornea abrasion once back in the hard contact days (I know, ancient stuff) and it hurt like hell!! So I have got to believe controlling that pain would be very important to the healing process! |
