please help! Yorkie ate cocoa powder Hi all- I could use some help right about now...my Toby just dug out some plastic lining from the trash that had cocoa powder on it and licked it clean! It was lining for tiramisu so I'm assuming it's unsweetened cocoa powder - I'm not sure exactly how much was on there but I'm guessing less than a teaspoon? Toby is 8.8lbs and 4 years old. Do you think this will be toxic to him? Is there anything I should do to him? I'm definitely going to keep an eye on him but he's sleeping right now and seems to be fine. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you! |
I used this calculator and entered in 9lb dog and 1/4oz of cocoa powder, it said the risk is moderate-severe and to go to the ER vet even if the dog isn't showing symptoms. Chocolate Toxicity Meter | petMD Good luck, if you don't go at least have someone watch him through the night and have the ER vet info ready. |
Scary. Hopefully all is well. Keep us updated. |
Thank you for the website! That's very useful. I will have to monitor him through the night - he seems ok right now so I'm really hoping he didn't ingest enough to do any harm. |
Did you induce vomiting after he ate it? |
I throw no food items in kitchen just for this reason. None of my dogs have ever gone after the trash but ya just never know. Food items I take straight to the outside trash pails, if this cannot be done keep food trash items in a plastic bag on top of a counter where your pup cannot get at it. Hope your baby is ok, please keep us posted. |
At that amount, he should be okay. This may help: The Chocolate Chart Interactive - National Geographic Magazine |
