Macy Hi guys. My Macy Girl was diagnosed with collapsed trachea several years ago. She has been doing great, but last year in June 2014, she got very sick. She had breathing difficulties and couldn't sleep. We ended up taking her to vet and it turned out that she had fluid around her lungs. She was given lasix and cough medicine. The cough medicine was amazing as she coughed up a bunch of phlegm. After that, she was back to her old self. Last week, she got sick again. She showed the same behavior as last year. Ended up taking her to vet. It turned out she had fluid around her heart. However, we had a different vet this time. She gave Macy lasix, enalapril, and vetedmin as well as her butorphanol that she has always taken since she was diagnosed with collapsed trachea. She was doing MUCH better. Ate again, back to her old self, but her vet wanted us to take Macy to heart vet just to make sure. It was found that she has pulmonary hypertension and is given medicine for it. She is now off lasix and enalapril per dr's order. She was off both medicine for two whole days with still taking butorphanol. She didn't start medicine for pulmonary hypertension til two days later because it had to be ordered. The whole two days she was fine... like nothing happened. When we gave her medicine for pulmonary hypertension, she started to act up again. What do you think this may be? |
Pulmonary hypertension can be difficult to treat but it can be treated. I would put a call in to the cardiologist and see if perhaps she needs to be seen. Her meds may need to be adjusted. Please keep us posted. |
I will keep you posted. Thank you for the reply. I am deaf, so I will have my mom call them tomorrow. She started this medicine last Friday (June 26th). Is it possible that the medicine hasn't kicked in yet? |

Sorry I have been meaning to get on the last few days, but I kept getting sidetracked with school. Macy Girl is doing much, much better compared to last week. She isn't struggling anymore. She will dry retch/gag at times and has thrown up very little phlegm. Is that something I should be concerned about? The only time I've seen her panting harder than normal was last night before she went to bed, but once she calmed down, she was fine and went straight to bed. She woke up happy this morning and is carrying her treat around throughout the house. :) I have a question, though. She is currently on butorphanol for her collapsed trachea and sildenafil for her pulmonary hypertension. Vetmedin is also given, but the vet said that if Macy does not take it, it is fine. I wanted to ask you all if I should continue giving her Vetmedin even if she does not like it? |
I also forgot to mention that she will sneeze from time to time. Should that be a concern as well? EDITED I made a post before making this post, but it has not been approved yet. You guys should be able to see it soon. Thanks. |
