Olivia's continued issues Olivia just got out of ICU today...she was admitted on Friday. Fortunately she responded to meds quickly; but once again scared the you know what out of me. Here last illness is here and there is an original link on that thread as well: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ick-again.html Her original diagnosis was in May 2014 and last hospitalization was April 2014. I spoke briefly with the specialist today about what do to in the future because this seems to just keep sneaking up on us. We are not sure if it is all due to her gall stone (they do hold infection) or if there is something in her liver (she would need a biopsy). Those things could be done or just continue to keep a close eye on her and perhaps have her bilirubin checked frequently. This episode started like the others. She didn't eat on Thursday. She seemed ok so I opted to see how she did the next day. Friday morning, she went under my bed and would not come out to eat. :( I took her straight to the vet and her liver enzymes were all elevated...her bilirubin was extremely high. The suspicion was a possible blockage due to the gall stones. I took her straight to the specialists and she was admitted, dehydrated and jaundiced. The ultrasound showed liver inflammation but thankfully no blockage of the bile duct and the gall bladder was fine other than a large stone. IVF and antibiotics were immediately started and by the next day she was showing improvement and eating! Her bilirubin is now normal. They did not do the liver enzymes again since it takes longer for those to come down...she will follow up in 5 - 7 days. I was not going to post this but then started thinking about people who come here saying their pup has not eaten for a couple of days and what can they do to get them to eat. Not eating is usually a problem and the anorexia is but a symptom....had I not taken her when I did I believe she would have become so much sicker and been in the ICU longer. Her WBC was not even elevated yet!! So, caught early. For her future...I don't know for sure what I will do. I really need to speak with the vets in more depth about this whole thing. Putting a 12 year old through a liver biopsy is not something I am keen on especially since she also has some renal issues. We shall see. |
Olivia So sorry to hear poor Olivia has had this setback, but glad to know that she is on the mend now having been treated so promptly. I agree that any change in GI or other behavior can be serious and should be vet checked ASAP. Early diagnosis and treatment can often nip any issue in the bud and prevent symptoms from becoming very serious. It is well worth the cost of a vet visit as diseases that are left untreated can be horrible for the dog and very expensive as well! Get well soon Olivia. You are a brave little soul. :) |
Sorry that Olivia is sick again. Anyone who has had gallbladder problems know that it can really hurt a lot. Glad she responded quickly and hope she continues to get better. |
Linda, I'm so happy to see Olivia's home and that she responded well to the meds. Poor baby girl, I hope she's feeling better, sending hugs. |
Praying that Olivia is feeling better soon. So glad that she is home. |
I'm sorry to hear about Olivia. I would consider a diet change. Hope you have answers to it all soon, if they can be found. Thanks for posting the reminder. Very scary. |
Awww poor Olivia! I'm so glad you got her in so very fast - I'm sure that's why she is already feeling so much better. I hope you find out good news for longer term outcomes and that the options won't be too hard on you both. Some people don't take inappetance seriously enough when in dogs, it can actually be a very serious sign. |
I'm glad Olivia is out of ICU and back home. Continuing to pray for your sweet little girl. |
Thanks everyone for your well wishes for Olivia. She is looking like a different pup aleady! Just amazing how quickly she turned around. So grateful! :) |
Yay! SO happy to read that Olivia is doing better! It is amazing how quickly they can turn around - it hurts so bad when they are in pain or discomfort - go little Olivia! :D |
Go Olivia! Hope she is one hundred percent soon! |
So glad you caught it early Linda! Saying prayers she continues to improve! |
Olivia went for her follow up on Friday and she is doing fine! Her albumin is a bit low due to the PLN but they are not terribly concerned since it has been running about the same for some time. Thankful the liver issue seems to be resolving! |
