Kennel cough or collapsed trachea? Hi.. Our little yorkie is 7 months old. We purchased him about 3 months ago and when we purchased him we were told he has a little cough but it wasn't nothing major.. The cough kept getting worse so we had to keep taking him to the vet.. They'd give medicine.. This happened 4 times and he still wasn't better! He's currently on hydrocone for dogs and something called doxy I can't recall the full name of it.. This medicine helps him but when he gets excited he'll still cough and I heard that's a sign of collapsed trachea? His nose is never wet.. Im honestly just worried.. This dog is my everything right now and i don't know what id do if I lost him.. Do dogs with this problem have a short life span? Sorry for all of the questions. I just don't know what to do anymore.. I'm losing hope |

Hmmmm...sounds a bit more like KC to me, than anything else...? Was this pup given the kennel cough vaccine? If yes, that's probably how he got it in the first place. If that's the case, I wouldn't be getting it again. I never get the KC vaccine for mine, as it's not a core vaccine (not needed). In pups, KC can take months to get rid of, unforch. The main thing you want to prevent is it progressing to pneumonia which can happen. If you do think this is KC...just hang in there as it will eventually resolve. |
How do you stop it from turning into pneumonia? And that's kind of relieving.. I was worried it was a collapsed trachea |
No one else knows..? |
Bella had a cough like that, but it would end in a sharp "kack" kind of sound. With a couple of rounds of antibiotics, it went away. Now to be sure, in my case once we got rid of that problem, others reared their ugly head, it is not that bad of a problem. Your little guy should be okay with a little care, attention and antibiotics. Keep us informed on how things are going and what the prognosis is! |
Anyone else please? Meds aren't helping! Starting to think it's CT. Taking him to another vet tomorrow to find out |
Kennel cough can take sometimes a month or more to go away and sometimes multiple rounds of antibiotics. |
He's had it for 3 months going on 4. And has been on 5 different medicines |
Maybe get a second opinion from a different vet. |
It sounds like he is try to hack up something not ct. I have two with CT and it really does not sound like CT to me. |
Mine had Kennel Cough also My 14 week fur baby has been battling this for a month. She started with Clavamox but that didn't help at all so the vet switched it over to Orbax but she had to take both at the same time for a few days. Her cough has improved a little on Orbax but she still has it from time to time specially when she is excited. I was afraid it was a CT also but doc says it's Kennel Cough. She was hospitalized as a result of this. I think that if the cough sounded wet then that would be a bad sign but the cough sounds dry. I would run the shower and sit with her in the bathroom for a little while. I was told this helps and I think it does. If you have a cool mist humidifier that should work also. This is what my dog sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPTIadFHtz0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8DxeoI3E28 I hope this helps! |
KC can take months to resolve in some puppies...but it wouldn't hurt to get another opinion from a vet. |
Update: Vet said he probably has CT.. Also has congestion in his lungs. They have him a shot in the back of his neck to see if it clears the congestion :(. He's in pain it's terrible seeing him like this. Vet said if this doesn't work he needs a tracheal wash and a surgery. And I heard terrible things about a CT repair surgery. If this shot doesn't work all hope is lost :(. Tracheal wash alone is thousands. This is just terrible. Just have to pray this shot works for our little guy. I can't see him get deathly Ill and pass this young. |
I would not do CT surgery it is very experimental. What is a trachea wash? |
You should try and get a second opinion! Don't lose hope!! They told me my dog looked terrible and she may not make it! Although we are still struggling she looks a lot better and now there is hope that we will put all of this behind us!! My vet also told me she might have a heart murmur but with her follow-up appt's we are happy to say she doesn't! So don't lose hope!!! Be strong and I hope that soon you will have all of this behind you and I hope your dog grows to be a very healthy dog! Sending prayers your way! |
It's just we're starting to thing it's CT. He basically only coughs when he gets excited which is one of the symptoms of CT. :( |

My puppy tends to cough a lot when she is excited and she had a really hard time breathing at first!! Get a second opinion if you can!! Did you see the vid I posted??? My dog did the same thing it just doesn't sound the same because my dog is smaller!! I pray that all of this is behind you soon. Please let us know how things go! |
Sick again How's your fur baby doing? |
Update: I think this new medicine is actually working! Vet said give it 10 days, and it's been 10 today and he coughs maybe 3-4 times a day! Way better than he was. He's been much more happy and playful. God must've been answering my prayers! It's so nice to see these little guys healthy and happy. |
Coughing hi, how's your baby doing? I just posted about my little guy coughing forever. Started at 3 months and finally kicked it a month later with azithromycin. His X-rays showed NOTHING! now it's been a month since it cleared up and he's slowly starting to cough again.. I'm concerned! What was the last thing your vet prescribed?? |
I'm happy to hear that he's better!! |
Thank you xena. Hope your pup can overcome what she has! |
Late update: Toby finally stopped coughing for good about a week and a half ago. In July, he got a shot into his lungs and it slowly cured him! These little guys are strong, he had that terrible cough for months! |
