I'm not sure if 2 tsp. twice a day is enough food. How much does she weigh? When my puppy was sick, my vet recommended adding weaning formula to her wet food for extra calories and vitamins. I don't know if it would be good for your pup but you could ask the vet. My pup got kennel cough from the vaccine. She got better after a few weeks of antibiotics but it was a difficult time. I wish you both the best and keep us posted.

She weighs roughly 1.25 lbs... I started going by what her tummy feels and when I force feed her after 3 tsp she feels full... we try to get food in to her at least 3 times a day but it has been very difficult and maybe it's because of her Giardia and the bad diarrhea she has that she doesn't want to eat

Dayswalters 06-30-2015 12:49 PM

I think the congestion made my baby not want to eat. I don't think she could smell the food enough to get her interested. Since yours is so small, 2 tsp. might be enough. I really hope she improves soon. I know how much it upsets me when my babies are sick. 😕

Yes, she was like that for a while!! Now she can smell things so she's a little better but I do have to force feed her from time to time. It's very upsetting... We are hoping for the best :)

Thank you all for thinking of us!!

- Update -

Between yesterday and today Xena is showing signs of improvement!!! Today was a great great great day!! She woke up and ate the kibble I left her last night. I have been feeding her every morning at 5:30 and I was pleasantly surprised to hear her eat her kibble exactly at that time!!! She hasn't been eating kibble at all so this is definitely a good sign!!

Russpilot 07-01-2015 09:34 AM

That is awesome!! So hoping your little girl kicks this and gets back to being a puppy! Keep the faith!

Just came on here to check how Xena is doing and I am thrilled to see this post! I have been hoping that she would start showing signs of improvement. This is fabulous and such a good sign! I hope that she continues to want to eat on her own.:) It is very sad and worrisome when we have a furbaby that is so sick.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

XenaLee 07-03-2015 06:17 AM

Thanks Everyone for sending us prayers! She's definitely more puppy like now!! Her cough is still around but not as bad.. It seems like everything that was wrong with her is disappearing day by day. It's such a joy seeing her enjoy treats!!! She's a different dog! Today we have a vet visit and I hope that Xena won't be on antibiotics any longer but she may have to since she's coughing just a little.

Funny how people say the word "puppy like" and I didn't understand what that meant but I can say that she hides a bone that we got her so that we don't take it away (like last time after letting her play for 1 hr!!). Then she gets it when she wants it and eats it "hidden" from us because she doesn't want us to know she has it hahahahah soooo she's puppy like?? :):):) :animal-pa

I am thrilled to see this happy post about Xena! I bet you are beyond thrilled to see Xena acting like a puppy. Hoping for a good vet visit.

-Update-

Xena got her distemper shot on Friday and is sounding like she has a bad cough again... Has anyone experienced this?? I don't know if maybe we should have waited to give the shot but since she is 14 weeks old the vet thought it was time... I'm worried about her being sick like before. She is still on Orbax and it's been almost a month. The vet said to keep her on it until she is not coughing for at least a week and stay on it one more week after she sounds better. She is eating but is not able to sleep well due to her cough :(

wigglewomyn 07-06-2015 11:31 AM

I wondered how Xena did over the holiday.

Poor Xena :( She just isn't having a good time of it. At least she is still eating. I don't think I would have given her the shot if she was still sick and on an antibiotic, sort of like they don't give people vaccines or injections if you are sick and/or on an antibiotic. Kennel cough has to run its course and sometimes, even when it seems as though they are almost better, it starts all over again. Xena has a really bad case of it. Hopefully she will start sleeping better.

I am hoping that she gets well soon and sending you healing thoughts.

XenaLee 07-06-2015 02:16 PM

We weren't sure about it either but the vet insisted since she is 3mos old and she thinks Xena needs interaction with other healthy dogs.

I'm glad that at least I'm not seeing other signs like before. She doesn't have nasal discharge and is eating like a piggy ;)

I am sooo happy to hear that Xena is eating like a piggy :D and that she no longer has nasal discharge. I suppose your vet knows best.

I understand about puppy socialization but if you were going to bring Xena over to my house and she had kennel cough, and if I hadn't had my puppies vaccinated with the kennel cough vaccination, I would ask you to wait until she was better so that my puppies didn't get it. Isn't Xena still contagious if she is still coughing from it? Also, I didn't take my puppies out around other puppies until they had their rabies vaccine so that they wouldn't contract anything. I don't know if that is right or not, but it is what I thought was correct.

I just hope that Xena's cough gets better soon so she can get off those darn antibiotics! Again, I am so happy to hear she is eating like a piggy and that she is getting better. YAY!!!

I would agree with you 100%!! I wouldn't want any other dog to catch KC!! I don't know if she is contagious but we are not taking the risk and we are just keeping her at home for now. She's scheduled to get the rabies and her booster in a little less than 3 weeks.

I've been working a lot lately, so I haven't been able to stop by YT, but I get alerts on my cell and I have been following up and praying for Xena. I am thrilled to hear that she is eating and being more puppylike! Continued good vibes and healing for you and Xena!

I'm so sorry that ou have been through such an ordeal with your little girl. I've had five Yorkies, and none have had the kennel cough vaccine. I pray that Xena continues to improve.

Yay Xena!!! Look at her go! I am very happy seeing her running around and acting like a normal puppy! I was almost crying as I watched your youtube clips because it was so sad, looking at Xena so sick and hearing her cough. I can only imagine how you felt being with her day in and day out and listening to her and watching her as sick as she was. I am so glad she has made it through being so very sick. She has a warrior will to live :) You really gave her the right name.

Yes, it was very sad :( I know a lot of dog owners go through this and Its very hard. Thank you for keeping her in your thoughts. I hope that her cough, which came back after her distemper shot, will go away. I hate hearing her sound so sick.

XenaLee 07-13-2015 01:44 PM

This was her today... Any ideas? Is it really kennel cough!?! Doctor wants to put her on another antibiotic. Orbax and Doxycycline for 2 weeks at the very least :(

Can you tell is she coughing out or does it seem like it's a sucking in? That really sounded like a reverse sneeze (what my boss called post-nasal drip) and is typically allergy related....

It sounds like she is coughing and sometimes reverse sneezing. Is this normal?? Is it dangerous? Anyone know what causes it??

mindy10 07-14-2015 09:20 AM

It sounds more like a reverse sneeze. Maybe he has bad allergies. All I can say is he is the cutest little mop head!!
