Kennel Cough?????
 

Hi all....

Been a while since I have been on the list. But my Pucci's symptom's bring me here.

I am not sure what is wrong with him and need the opinion of my fellow Yorkie owners.

I have had full blood work done on him (and my GiGi) for the past 2 years. Pucci has a persistent cough. This has been brought to the Vets attention over the past 2 years and the Vet even did a full body xray to further check him out. It is now time for his annual and he will get his full panel of blood work but the blood work never shows any signs of kennel cough or other infection. He has the past 2 weeks had some soft stool with his normal stool but not a sign of anything serious. That seems to have also cleared for the most part.

His cough has been a little more persistent for the past 2 weeks....did not seem as bad before the past 2 weeks. Just sometimes on and off and I would give him some Beneryl cause it could have been an allergy.

During the winter the Vet gave him some antibiotic which seemed to help and the cough was not so bad after that just seemed like some dry throat. If his cough was unusually bad I would have taken him to the Vet again so I would have to say it was not very noticeable.

But it does worry me that this cough flairs up on occasion. He is fine now...he is always ok when I take him out for his walks...never a problem the ...only in doors. I gave him some honey with lemon around 4PM before we went out. And when we got home I gave him 1/4 of a baby aspirin in case he has a slight cold or fever....he is eating fine and still wants goodies.

Has this happened to anyone else's Yorkie. Any info appreciated. This must stop and the Vet is not finding anything with all the blood work.

Could it be acid reflux irritating his throat ? Or collapsed trachea? Could try some Pepcid if the vet agrees?
Sorry your baby is having this problem. Hope gets better soon.

It could be acid reflux. ....he had that 2 years ago. We changed Vets and he never got it again. When he had it I actually had to feed him 4 small meals a day and I had to
pulverize his kibble so his food was easy to digest. We changed Vets cause he was giving both dogs unecessary shots and they were causing acid reflex. Now Pucci eats like crazy and treats too. So could be he
needs a little Pepcid now. I will give him a 1/4 tablet before breakfast. One time I gave him a 1/4 tablet after he ate and it made him sick.

So yes we will try that tomorrow.

My dog is always hungry and eats 4 meals a day plus! It is hard to keep him satisfied and keep his weight down. I give him 1/4 Pepcid at night with his food or he tends to throw up bile in the am. In the day he is usually ok, but can give a little cough if he gets excited or barks a lot.
As the 10 mg human Pepcid pills are hard to split up I get a chewy chicken flavored pill from a compounding vet pharmacy that is easy to cut. He loves these and so it is easy to get him to take them.
Perhaps you could crush up the Pepcid and always give with food?

Gave him 1/4 tablet this morning....he has improved but he still has irritation
causing coughing, but not as persistent as yesterday. Hope his throat heals.
I know acid reflux can do a lot of damage if not attended to. Just hope we caught
caught this in time.

Could be acid reflux or collapse trachea. How old is he? Usually collapse trachea shows up around 6-8 years old and especially if they are overweight. Also a cough can be from a enlarged heart. But you said you took him to the vet so I am sure they would of seen that on the X-rays. Is it a full blown out cough. Look up collapse trachea and reverse sneeze on youtube. If you can't look it up let me know I can post two videos here for you. My yorkie does this fast hack sometimes and sometimes he will spit saliva with it.

I am not sure about reverse sneeze. It seems that the Pepcid is working (I hope ). Much less coughing but still some but not a continuous hack. Also I pulverized his kibble for easier digestion and I only fed him 1/2 his normal food. I want to let his throat heal. I think it was Very very irritated.

Yes it was a very hacking non stop cough. Uncontrollable cough. Don't think it is trachea cause he has a good bark. Usually with trachea it is difficult for them to bark.


Thanks for the articles I will read them...I have read a few articles on gurd but there is always something new to learn the more you read.

Pucci is 13...he will be 14 in January. He is doing good for his age but I never take for granted that things change fast.

Poor Pucci. The cough must be upsetting for him.
Perhaps you could talk to your vet re the possibility of an acid irritated throat, and if there is something better than Pepcid to heal it?
I have found with my boy that a little and often feeding suits him, and perhaps Pucci would do better with that regimen. Also could you feed a canned Prescription food that is easier on his throat and tum?
I feel for dogs that cannot suck on a Tums when they have a little acid attack as some of us humans can.
He is a senior and may respond well to a lighter and more frequent feeding?

Our Bella had a hack and a cough, vet prescribed something like Benadryl to help dry up the throat and she has been cough free for a while now. This sort of thing can be managed, just hang in there and Pucci will be doing great in no time!

Thanks my thought today was to also give him benadryl
I just want to wait a while cause he just ate.
