Teacup Yorkie Fell Down Stairs!!
 

I was cleaning up my little one's mess that he made on the floor and while doing so he ran after something and fell down quite a few hardwood stairs. All I heard was a thud and when I looked down he was falling off the last step onto the floor at the bottom and I was absolutely hysterical. Chewie's only about 3 pounds and the poor baby is only 10 weeks old. When he fell he seemed a little dazed as he whimpered a tiny bit and I was able to pick him up to check him. I looked for any tender spots and he didn't seem to feel any pain in his legs or abdominal area; however, I did notice a foul smell coming from his behind. It seems like he secreted anal gland fluid from being so scared (I think I'm not sure). I also noticed a little bit of swelling in his groin area. I let him walk around, gave him some food, etc. and he ate/drank perfectly fine. He played with his toy and was walking around like nothing. He did seem a bit slow as opposed to usually running after his toys, he sort of trotted after them this time. He's currently sleeping and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. My main concern is what seems to be swelling and other internal injuries. The swelling looks like inguinal hernia, but I don't think it is. It just seems like that kind of swelling in that area. Either way I'm calling out vet first thing in the morning as I have no ER veterinaries anywhere near my area ):

You are doing the right thing by taking him to the vet this morning. Let us know what the vet says!

It really depends on how he fell. Still, I would be at the vet ASAP since our little guys are great at hiding pain. Watch him closely. Also, some vets have a message when you call after hours that has a number to call in an emergency. I would check that out. Additionally, I would take this opportunity to research emergency vet care in your area since there are times that you can't wait, such as an allergic reaction.

Please make sure you do get this baby to the Vet and have checked real well.

Hopefully, you did go to the vet this morning with this wee one...and I'm hoping for good news! Please let us know how he is...

Hello everyone!

I called Chewie's vet and he told me that as long as he's up and running and being himself (which so far so good) he should be fine. He told to me to keep an eye out for vomiting, lethargy, and any other odd signs of Chewie not acting like himself. Thank God he's okay, he seems like himself, very playful, and excited; his appetite is also just the same! This little one wants to eat, eat, eat! Vet said he might be a little sore, but to just keep an eye out for him for the next couple of days. Thank you all for your advice and concerns. I'm hopeful that no other problems will arise from this incident. Has anyone ever had a similar situation occur? If so, what did you do and how was your pup after the fact? Thanks again!

I hope Chewie will be okay! These little guys are really pretty tough and bouncy. As long as you don't think he has a concussion, if all limbs are working well I think the vet will find him sore but okay.

I hope the Vet appt went well and your bay is safe. It is so scary how quickly something bad can happen.

Hello everyone!

I posted an update a while ago to let you all know that Chewie is doing great so far, but it doesn't seem to have went through. The vet said he should be fine as long as he is not experiencing any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and other odd signs of him not being himself. He's super playful and up and running as usual! Not to mention his appetite is definitely not lacking! I'm still keeping a close eye on him, because one can never be too sure. Thank you all for your well wishes and concerns! I will be investing in some baby gates for my little one as he is still really adventurous and curious. I don't think the fall scared him enough, slowly but surely we'll conquer some stairs, but until he gets a little bigger, baby gates it is! I also received some amazing feedback from others referring me to ER Vets in my area! Thank you!

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this as far as having an accident with your pup?

Max mastered the stairs early. It took Sasha a little while longer. She went up them for 2 months before she would go down. But the weird thing about both is that they will only go up and down the stairs going to the 2nd floor. Neither one will go down the basement steps. They are both carpeted and about the same steepness. I will go in the basement for an hour and they both sit at the top step and wait but will not come down. I am actually glad they won't because the basement is not dog proofed

Duncan and Elliot are also like this. They go up and down the 'upstairs' to the 2nd floor but when I go to the basement, they sit at the top of the stairs in the kitchen and don't even try to come downstairs. Like you said, it's a good thing. I don't know if I would be able to find them for quite awhile if they came down into the basement.

My basement is also not dogproofed, and Bella won't go down the basement stairs either. The cat goes into the basement, though. It's one of the few places she can go to get away from Bella (besides the study and the cat's room--with litter box, cat food and water bowls, and a cat igloo--which both have baby gates that the cat can jump, but Bella can't).
