My baby is sick 😟 Hi it is me again with another question. My baby has parvovirus. She is at a very early stage and still has not vomiting or diahrea but she is not eating at all on her own. The vet gave her medication to prevent the vomiting or diahrea and Hill's Prescription A/D which I give in a syringe every few hours with electrolyte fluid. I also give her the fluid every 30 minutes in the syringe. He saw her this morning and said she is getting better (thank God). But my question is is there any alternative to the Hill's A/D that has better ingredients. I had been feeding her Wellness Core Puppy before she got sick. I just don't feel so good about Hills. I will ask my vet before I decide. But I feel I have googled everywhere to find another option at no avail. Your input would be awesome thank you. |

Here is the info on Hill's Prescription A/D along with the rationale for prescribing it. People can click on the "ingredients" tab to see what's in it. Hill's Prescription Diet a/d Urgent Care with Chicken Canned Dog & Cat Food, 5.5-oz, case of 24 |

Sorry your baby is sick. |
My mind is totally consumed with all the rain and flooding and distruction and breaking dams on lakes and more rain heading this way....so I can not even THINK of the medication that you can give a puppy diagnosed with Parvo when it is caught even before diarrhea and vomiting start....and it knocks it out in less than a week.....another member on here know the med qand is familiar with the treatment....maybe she will be able to remember ....seems like it is.........Tamiflu??????? I am sorry I cant think right now.... |

I am sorry your pup is sick, your breeder sounded like she must have been decent since she said she was keeping the pup till she was 12 weeks old, what else do you know about her? Do you know much about Parvo, it is normally VERY SERIOUS most pups need to be under 24 hour vet care and many do not survive it. I am hopeful your vet is correct that she is getting better. While I have never had a pup with parvo I would think if I did the ingredients in the dog food for this phase would be the least of my worries. anyway good luck to you and let us know how she is doing Parvo (Parvovirus) in Dogs: Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment |
Unfortunately I dealing with rescue dogs with limited history I have had experience with parvo. I have also had 2 fully immunized dogs who contracted parvo. One made it, one didn't. They usually require IV support and time to allow the intestines to heal, then start feeding slowy with a high calorie relatively bland diet. AD is what my vet uses during the recovery phase and it seems to work well. We also use tamiflu. The dosage is 1 mg/pound every 12 hours for 10 doses. If no response, such as decreased amount of vomiting or stools increase to 2 mg/pound for the remaining doses. It must be given within 48 hours of onset to optimize effectiveness. One the dog is having bloody stools the effectiveness decreases. You can also use as a preventative if your dog has been exposed but the snap test is negative, then you would use 1mg /pound once a day for 5 days. Tamiflu is NOT a cure, just additional support while the body heals. I personally have had all my dogs parvo titers done. There is no mixing of rescues until they have been in isolation for 2 weeks. It's easier to prevent than cure. |
Oh thank you so much guys for the support she is a lot better and is now eating and drinking in her own. She had already had her first two vaccinations and the vet says that is why it did not hit her as hard. And the fact that I noticed in time that she was not well ,she was never given the opportunity to dehydrate. It had already been two days that she had been sick when I made the post. Her breeder told me not to take her outside unless I was sure no other animals could get in until she was 16 weeks and had her last round of shots, so in part it was my fault. We live in a fenced yard and about two days ago I saw a cat in my yard and I started researching how she could get Parvo and saw that cats are carriers. I had no idea that it had been in my yard and she used to potty outside. Now we are using potty pads inside. But I feel extremely bad because it could have been worse but I am just thankful she is better now. |
Yea! Glad she is better now and that you came back and told us. Thank You |
