Hip Issues
 

Charlie seems to have something similar. I noticed slight lip a while back but didn't get too worried as he seemed fine otherwise. Then we went shopping a week ago and I put him in the seat part of a cart while we shopped. After that his hips seem to be worse. More on the right side then the left. When he goes up or down the stairs he keeps his two back legs together and hops like a bunny. After walking around a bit he doesn't limp as bad, but when he sleeps, always on his left side he gets up and his limp is very pronounced. I took him in to the vet and they said it couldn't be his hips, probably his knees. They said they would prescribe an anti-inflammatory if I liked. I wanted to see if he got better but he's not.
I saw an article a while ago that said that Yorkies are prone to hip dysplasia. When I told the vet this she said it's not so.
Weird. Any way, with his hips/knees I can't take him for walks like before. He hurt so bad last night he couldn't lift his leg to go potty. I ended up carrying him home from his potty walk. He felt much better when I put him down on the porch. Poor fella, sure wish I could figure out something to help him. Is there and all natural anti-inflammatory I can give him? I prefer to go natural where he is concerned. I even make his snacks.
I hope you find out what is wrong, maybe that's Charlie's problem.

Your vet is wrong ... yorkies can have hip dysplasia although I don't think it is common. What is common is Legg Calves Perthes. I have a pup with hip dysplasia. She had it in both hips and had surgery on one. Here is a link about her and her surgery:

Your vet has not suggested an xray of his hips? If not, to be frank, I might be on the hunt for a new vet. Probably at this point, you might want to just go to an orthopedic surgeon for an opinion/diagnosis. You can find a board certified surgeon here:

I concur with LadyJane. The vet should have done an Xray to rule out hip dysplasia and or Leggs Calves Perthes Disease. The vet should have been able to tell if your boy has Luxating Patella and or if an ACL tear is also suspected.


I don't know how old your boy is but his movement patterns are definitely abnormal - as you can tell.


Depending upon what is going on with your boy - yes there are some natural remedies that can assist in arthritis and hip dysplasia - but you need to get a good diagnosis first. Natural remedies will not cure any arthritic condition but can help/assist your dog live a more comfortable life.

Are you saying you denied the perscription for an anti-inflamatory? If so, I think you need to reconsider. At least for the imediate time until you figure out a natural remedy if that is the way you wish to go. Your pup is demonstrating that he is in a great deal of pain and sounds like he needs some relief soon.

I have some pain pill for him to start. I am going to try to get Charlie in to see the vet this week. I'll insist on an xray. I'll also ask for some anti-infamitories, if that's what he needs. I hope it's something that simple as my insurance won't cover anything major. I've filed for disability for myself, so I may be able to pay for more work if needed. If it hadnt been for the income tax we'ed never have been able to get him this health.
I was always raised with mutts. They rarely ever need any thing. This is all new to me. I didn't know Yorkie's could be so expensive or I would have had to turn down the offer to have him. Now I can't imagine being without him.
