Thank you for sharing your story...I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. I hope that I react as well as you did if a situation like this ever occurs. I'm very glad to hear that Barney is doing well.

I've read so many bad reviews for tea/flick collars. I never use them and get Revolution from the vet which works great and my dogs never had issues. Glad your dog is well.

Cathy, I just read your story & could feel your shock and fear as you described the moment you found him down and then driving to the ER vet. I don't know how any of us gets to the ER vet alive anytime we drive there because most of us are so scared during that drive we're shaking too hard to even see well or have normal reactions. Thank God you made it, Barney got his reversal shot, tests, observation and he's resting at home now. That was far too close a call. Thank God you didn't collar the dogs & go out shopping or something!

Thank you for posting this thread! It's a wonderful warning to everyone. It's so wonderful Barney is going to be okay - that was too close a call.

It depends on the ingredient in the collar and how it will affect a particular dog. The one I used had a specific antidote so the effects were at least reversible. I am not fan of revolution. I used that on my dog Daisy a few years ago and she had muscle weakness and skin burning. I also was talking to someone the other day whose dog was vomiting, wouldn't eat, and was weak for three days after advantix application. It's unfortunate but these things happen.

I've never been a fan of flea colars. Have always read bad effects from them. But my question is why do Yokies get fleas other then being in a kennel or vets?? With all the bathing and brushing ...All the emphasis in feeding them right? I always read ppl having fleas? I have never had a flea problem with any dogs. Yorkie or other Brushing them everyday seems to do the trick.. But it just could be the climate in Washington?? Dunno I know ppl whos dogs get fleas but the don't brush them and there flea collars arent working either...

I saw a flea for the first time in my life when I was in my early 40s. Climate is part of it. We walk in areas where dogs traveling from warmer states stop (I-95 corridor). Florida has a much harder time with fleas, for instance.

Cathy's primary concern is ticks which are a big threat in her area. We have not had any tick problems here for a couple years. Probably because I stopped walking the dogs in our neighborhood.

Yea..Ticks never seen one. Only can get those here if you go into the woods or bush..My dogs go on trails and Inspect them after but I just read that ppl get them just from there own yards....I do like 4 seasons. Helps with bug control

We treat our yard too and don't have a problem on the ground, but our neighborhood is really woodsy, native trees. The ticks fall out of the trees. I have to check myself after working in parts of our yard.

Strangely, we saw quite a few ticks when we lived in the Chicago suburbs with manicured lawns. We had to constantly check our Airedale. Yorkies are much easier to check. :D

Mike, as Kristin said, this wasn't a flea collar. It was just for ticks. I hate all the pesticides, but have always have but felt that the risks from tick borne disease were more worrisome. A toxic exposure event where your dog is going out changes your life, it is very scary. I've changed my ability to use any product for this. For fleas, we are covered by Sentinel.

I am off to plant my (safe) tick repellant plants in my garden and try to border off areas of the garden where I suspect ticks hang out. I'm making up my own tick repellant spray too. I don't feel like it's the protection of the pesticides but may be better than nothing.

Wild animals (including rats and mice) and feral animals are flea havens, so if you walk your dog outdoors in some parts of the country, it's very easy to get fleas--at least it is in Illinois and Iowa during spring and summer. Here is an article about fleas and mice:

Thought I'd mention, this just came to mind...since you hate these toxic chemicals. Have you ever explored Neem Oil or Neem Spray, as an alternative? In the rest of the world, it's used a ton as a natural and safe repellent. I do know it's supposed to work great for fleas/mosquitos...what I'm not clear about is whether it repels ticks or not. Anyway, just a thought...

I just realized I don't have the poison control number on my fridge. I will correct that this evening.

Funny but when ever there is an emergency I am either at home alone or if hubby is present I get to drive there too!

True. I've always have had dogs. Never flea problems. But in general ppl in my area usually don't unless they don't have good grooming and diet habits..Never really have much of a bug problem here. Never to hot and just cold enough to hopefully help control them.
