Yazmin ate a Fig Newton, I'm worried! Oh No! It's after midnight and I have to be up for work in 3 hours but Yazmin just stole a single Fig Newton, isn't a Fig toxic? Has anyone experienced this before? I know Grapes and Raisins are toxic, isn't the Fig in the same category? Should I be making her throw it up or take her to the Emergency room? I'm worried, please help! :( |
No they're not to my knowledge. |

I highly doubt that there is much fig in a Newton to start with. I just looked it up too and it's not listed at the ASPCA poison. If you're really worried you can call them for $65. |

I would call too if I was worried. Let us know what they say, you'll speak to a vet toxicologist. (Yes, I've called before lol) |

Thank you again so much for being here to help me, I wasn't thinking of calling the ASPCA until reading your reply. It's comforting to know YT members care for each and every baby. ;) |
I'm so glad you feel better. I hope Yazmin feels ok though the night. |

Figs In my youth I was given Syrup of Figs for constipation, ugh!! If I remember the result was diarrhea, so perhaps you should watch for that. Perhaps give her some pumpkin just in case? Glad to hear it is not toxic to dogs and hoping that there was not enough to give her the usual effect! Luckily it seems no harm done so don't worry :) Hope she suffers no ill effects, but she most probably will be fine. |
I'm glad to hear your Yazmin will be ok! It's so great to have so many people here looking out for one another and each others fur babies :) |

Dottiesyrky, I've never heard of Syrup of Figs, it sounds horrible and not too much fun too drink! Lol It's now 4:00 AM, Yazmin's usually up at 3 for breakfast but she seems to be okay! The only thing that seems to have effected her was loosing an hour of beauty sleep! I agree MiMiAndG, it's comforting to know so many other members care for our babies and willing to help in our time of need. ;) |
Aww, it sounds like things are okay. You are such a good mom. I remember Vivi ate about five heartworm treats a couple of years ago and the emergency vet gave me a number to call. I posted about this on YT and it and I'll try to find it. It cost something like $30 for the phone call, but found out she would be fine. |
Mine climb into my fig tree and eat figs right off the tree when they get ripe! They LOVE figs and will gorge themselves until they get diarrhea if allowed to do so! |

Although the whole incident seems a little funny today, I'm so grateful to the YT'rs who responded so quickly to help me last night. ;) |
So glad to hear Yazmin is doing well after her human treat! She sure took advantage of the moment when she grabbed it! Syrup of figs is a liquid laxative made from figs, and it tasted sweet if I remember (many moons ago!). The only bad thing was its laxative effect :( Luckily the Newton probably contained only a small amount of figs and is mainly sugar. Better watch out for the cookies now she has a taste for them.:) In fact figs are very nutritious and high fiber, perhaps we should eat more....in moderation of course, LOL! |
Yazmin is a little stinker stealing mamma's cookies when she sleeps! So glad she's okay, I know things like this can scare you to death until you get an answer. |

I am just seeing this -- and I am relieved Yazmin is okay!! Little stinker. Good thing she is adorable and sweet. :D We have ficus trees, 'pseudo' figs, in the house. Can't stand the thought of parting with them because they were my mom's. They produce tiny, tiny fruits. Max and Teddy have eaten a couple without harm. Tell Yazmin to stay out of trouble! :) |
glad she is okay |

Glad she's okay! FYI though, if you ever think whatever she ingested is dangerous, give her little of peroxide to induce vomiting. I had to do that once with my two when they stole couple chocolate chip cookies. |
I sure am glad your Yasmin is alright but I did have a good laugh when you said she ran to her crate with cookie in mouth and turned her back to you and practically gobbled the whole thing whole. She......"You're not getting any of my fig newton" Cute. :D Sorry for the scare she put you through though. :( |
Whew, very happy to hear Yazmin is ok. |
Thank you ladies, I appreciate everyone's concern. Although Yazmin put me through quite a fright, it's a huge relief to know figs are safe! I keep a printed list of toxic foods from the ASPCA on my refrigerator but I'm now doing research and compiling a list of safe foods! ;) Magnus, I thought of giving Yazmin peroxide/water at the time but I didn't feel comfortable giving it to her without a vets advice. I honestly don't remember exactly what I feared Yazmin may have injested once when she was a puppy but to be on the safe side, my vet advised I give her a small amount of peroxide mixed with water. I do remember she vomited immediately but only the peroxide at the time. Geez! This girl's giving me grey hair! :D |

OMGosh Judy, I wish I had known this last night, I had know idea figs were perfectly safe for a dog to eat! The funny thing is that Yazmin's NEVER taken food without permission until last night. I woke up around 1:00 AM with Yazmin was sitting on my chest, growling to let me know our new neighbors arrived home. After reassuring her everything was okay, I opened the Fig Newtons to eat just one before falling back to sleep. Lol Within seconds I heard the package crinkling and before I could react, Yazmin was flying down her ramp with a fig newton in her mouth! I panicked, thinking of grapes and raisins as I kept repeating for her to "Leave It"! She knew she was in trouble so she ran into her crate, turned her back towards me and practically gobbled the cookie whole! I'm guessing the aroma of the fig out won the "Leave It" command. :D Although the whole incident seems a little funny today, I'm so grateful to the YT'rs who responded so quickly to help me last night. ;)[/QUOTE] I am glad your baby is okay. However, I just had to wipe away tears at picturing your baby stealing the cookie and running because the whole scenario is pretty funny. I had to share it with my family because I couldn't stop crying from laughing so hard. The image of her running away while you are telling her to leave it. Something I have experienced in my own life with my dogs! Glad she is fine though and no harm done. |

OMGosh, I now know why some call them little terrors, it's good to know I'm not alone! Lol |
