Renial failure in my 3 yr old Yorkie I have a 3 yr old Yorkie who I thought was going thru a false pregnancy. I didn't breed her but I thought that is what was going on. She swelled up like she was ready to pop. I took to Vet today and he said she has Kidney Failure. I was shocked and sad. He said she might live 6 mths to a year. He did blood work her kidney function was bad. He put her on Enalapril once a day 2.5 mg. And also K D diet. She is so swollen looks like she has a football in her belly. I feel so bad for her. Was wondering what else I could do for this sweet little Yorkie who is only 3 yrs old today. I really would like to help her she is great dog. She doesn't act sick but vet said she is really sick. If anyone has any information on what also I can do I would love to hear it. I have a heavy heart and very sad eyes right now and any help would be welcome. |
Just wanted to let you know I am praying for you brave little one. Hope someone on here gives you some health tips for Kidney Faiure |
I'm sorry, I don't have any advice but I'd like to send positive healing thoughts to your sweet girl. |
I'm so sorry to hear what you and your little girl are going through. I just want you to know that I send prayers and lots of love to your little one and strength to you. I'm sure the very knowledgable members will be along shortly with plenty of suggestions that will help you get thru this difficult situation. Not having any experience with this, all I say is pet her and let her know how you love her. If she's up to playing, play all her favorite games. I have an older Shih Tzu on palliative care at home, and I just do all his favorite things for him…he loves walks and seeing people..so I'm walking my butt off (literally!) I spoil him with little treats when Sunni's not around. The only comfort I get in this situation is knowing that my poor little guy couldn't be loved more by anyone, and he knows it. Your little one knows it too…stay strong. |
Twister, did your vet tell you the cause of the kidney failure? Did he mention something like Juvenile Renal Dysplasia? He would need to do an ultrasound to diagnose JRD. Did he tell you what her kidney numbers were? Three years old is very young for chronic kidney failure. If not JRD, there are treatable conditions that can cause kidney failure, and they range from a UTI or kidney infection to pancreatitis to tick born diseases and Lepto. Often, if you can figure out and treat the cause of the CRF, kidney function will improve. I am not sure I understand why her stomach is swollen. Does she have ascites (fluid) in her abdomen. Did your vet do anything to treat the ascites? That must be very uncomfortable for her. It is not a common symptom of renal failure, although I'm not saying it can't be related. Ascites is more common with other conditions. Did he offer you any other treatment options besides enalapril and KD? If you do a search, there are quite a few recent threads on kidney failure that might give you some idea of what you're dealing with. If you can provide more information, you will get better suggestions on things you can do to help your girl feel better. Is she eating? Drinking a large amount of water? Did he suggest anything to reduce stomach acid like Pepcid? Did he offer you anything for nausea? Did the vet do a urinalysis to check for protein in the urine or urine specific gravity? Did he check her blood pressure? Lack of appetite, drinking and peeing unusually large amounts, nausea and vomiting are typical symptoms of kidney failure and can be treated to make your girl more comfortable. Sending lots of prayers. Diana |
I noticed you said she is not spayed. Some dogs that are not spayed can get an infection called Pyometra. It can cause kidney failure if not treated. I would ask your vet about that. Sending prayers. 3 is too young. |
So sorry - sending prayers So sorry to hear about your precious little one and her kidneys. I don't know anything about this affliction, but I lost my 10 year old nearly 3 months ago, totally unexpected from a bacterial infection. I will be sending thoughts and prayers for you! |
