Puppy having diarrhea after switching from his puppy food Desperate new yorkie mommy here! I brought my yorkie home when he was 4 months, he's now 5 1/2 months old. His stools were perfect on the puppy food they sent him home with (Regal Puppy Bites). I gradually started switching him to Science Diet Puppy food and everything about his stools changed. I took him to the vet (and they loved the thought of switching him to Science Diet) about his diarrhea, they put him on a pill and some bland canned food for a week. His stools were still very soft. I've now tried boiled chicken and white rice and everything is worse! He seemed to be better on the science diet. He's not lethargic, in fact he's super playful! Does anyone have a Yorkie that reacts badly to chicken and rice? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want a happy healthy puppy. I've heard pepto is safe, but I'm afraid to try it on a puppy. Thanks, - Worried Yorkie Mommy! |
Hi and welcome to YT. Have you called your vet back and told him about the stool problems? Also have you tried 100% pure canned pumpkin? It can work wonders! If it continues I would visit your vet again. |
I would call the vet back, and the pumpkin can work wonders |
Was the food he was on making him sick or something? Why the switch? I always suggest if it aint broke, dont fix it! Canned pumpkin works very well...if his food he was on and was used to eating was not making him ill, he was tolerating it well, and it meets the daily recommended requirements for nutrition for a puppy, just leave well enough alone! When puppy is around 10 months old, it is usually recommended to switch to adult food, make your change then! |

Just an update - I took my little lovebug to the vet again. They are trying a whole new method to cure this and good news! It's working! He's back to the happy, healthy puppy I brought home over a month ago!! :) |
Thanks for the update and the good news that your boy is feeling better on the vet's new regimen. Hope he continues to be well. It might help others with a similar issue if you could let us know what the vet came up with? Thanks. |

Thank you!! Wow, I bet you are happy with this result!!! The Hills ID, both kibble and canned do wonders for most dogs with a sensitive stomach. The Probiotic is good too, but don't know what Tylan is…but I can look it up:) Hope the transition back to his old food works, if not you may be able to use the Hills? Great news to hear you have a well dog again. Thanks again for the info:) |

Just food fot thought... |
allergies? One more thing to concider is food allergies. Some Yorkies, (Like our Bella) is allergic to chicken, all forms of corn and certain grains... they give her the runs every time! Keep notes on which things you give your little one that cause digestive or behavioral issues or make their eyes tear a lot. (Look for common ingredients in past foods that caused similar issues) This will help you a lot down the road... |

You mentioned Regal being a high quality food - do you yourself know the brand? You're the first person I've ever talked to that's even heard of it. I guess I just thought that if no one has heard of it - maybe he shouldn't be eating it. |
