PLE disease My little Yorkie, four pounds of him, started to show an ever growing belly just before Christmas. Went to the Vet and he said not to feed him so much. Well it got bigger and the rest of his body was turning into skin and bones, the poor guy was not well. Back to the vet who sent us to a specialist in internal medicine. Diagnosis: PLE. protein loss entropothy. Olle was not processing protein, turning it into water which was gathering around his intestines. Vet waid we were lucky it hadn't gathered in his lungs or he would have died. He got shots, pout on predizone, and a couple of other meds, and today he iss right back to his old sself. But he will have to be on medicine the rest of his life as the disease is controlled not cured. Yorkies, Wheaten Terriers, Basenjis, and Elkounds are prone to this disease although it can his any dog. My bill was almost $2000. BUT I have medical insurance, have filed a claim, and I hope to get freinmbursed most of the money. Thanks for reading the story and I hope you don't get hit with this problem. Bill McGrath |
Thank God you had the gut instinct to get a second opinion! I just got pet insurance. Stupidly, I did it after my puppy had to have a corrective surgery..but at least now I won't have to worry about anything in the future. Its such a good idea if you can get it. Even the cheapest plans are helpful:) So happy to hear your baby is doing well now. |
I have a somewhat similar problem to yours in that my Yorkie had a big stomach too the first of March and I found out his body was not getting enough nutrients from his food and his liver protein is extremely low. He was put on antibiotics and a diuretic and Denamarin for his liver and a multivitamin. He also has gastroenteritis and kept having diarrhea even with the special food for it so he changed his food and he is now eating Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein dry and canned. I take him in Monday to have his blood checked again to see what his liver proteins are now. Hopefully this all will have helped enough so he won't need an ultrasound or biopsy. It was like your problem with the enlarged stomach but different reasons. I am glad the vet took care of the problem for you and the meds will help him. Do you have trouble getting him to take the meds? I sure do even the chewable two he takes every day. |
So glad he is doing well. I lost Dixie at four from PLE. We spent about $5,000 on her in 2 weeks, nothing helped and we lost her. So glad the meds are working for him! |
Hi Bill, your little guy is a very lucky boy to have such a great dad. Glad you have insurance for him! If you are ever looking for more YT members who have experience with PLE, here is another one: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/4247618-post6.html Best wishes for your boy. |
