Libby is not walking - Help! Libby was fine before we went to bed a few hours ago. I got up a few mins ago and Libby was sitting in the bedroom floor. She tried to walk towards me, but she is dragging her rear legs. She doesnt seem to be in any pain. I then noticed that her stomach is tight. She ate dinner last night. I picked her up and took her outside. She did urinate and started to eat some grass. She is now sitting on my lap alert and awake with no pain. But she does not have use of her rear legs. I am going to take her to the vet in the morning. Any ideas on this? |
I'm sorry to hear she is having problems, and I hope you can get her into a vet soon. I have no ideas, and only a vet can diagnose this. |
Her back is out. Keep her crated & do not let her jump on or off anything. Do you have a Chiropractic Vet near you ? if you can find one who also has a K-Laser that would be good. |
If you go to the K-Laser web site & go to find a provider near you then enter your zip & under categories click on Veterinarian it will bring up several in your area. This just happened to my Moms yorkie 2 wks ago & he was up & running in 2 days after X-ray, adjustment & K-laser. |
There is one about an hour away. I will take her there first thing in the morning. |
I think she has a dislocated knee. Her knee alignment in her left leg is much different than her right. I can move the leg and she does not appear to be in pain. |
If she were mine, she would be an an emergency vet tonight! If this is her back, time is of the essence. |
The vet opens in 3.5 hours. I live in a rural area. I don't have 24 hour emergency services available. I watch a you tube video on a yorkie who has a dislocated hip. Libby has the exact symptoms. When lying on her stomach one leg is shorter than the other when extended. |

Hope all goes well at the vet...please let us know!! |
Just got home from the vet. Took xrays and everything is in place. Two vertebrates in her back are questionable. The doctor thinks she has a pitch nerve. She is on Tramadol, Prednisone, and Sucralfate. She really didnt want to take the Prednisone. Must taste really bad. Doctor wants an update on Monday. Thanks everyone. Its been a long night. |
I hope you managed to get the prednisone in her. Very important! I am sure they told you to keep her quiet... best crated. Hopefully you both can catch some zzz's now. :) Thanks for the update...hope she improves on the meds. |
dog Prayers for your sweet little dog. I hope she heals up soon. I am so sorry this is happening. |
She is in a very small bathroom to limit her movement. I'm at work now, but not much work is being done. I will be home with her over the weekend. Forgot to mention. They gave her an enema for induced bowl movement. That gave her a bit of relief. |
What a terrible night you had! You must be exhausted. You are right; prednisone tastes terrible, both people and dog pred ;) My one dog has problems with her back all the time. A few days of meds and rest and your baby should be fine. I hope your baby heals quickly. |
Those meds and strict rest are good (very small kennel is best). I am really concerned for you and your pup though. When they go lame on both back legs it is usually a disc (which your vet confirmed). Cord compression never truly heals, even with meds. When it is this severe, the longer your pup can't walk the more likely she never will. This is why it is an emergency. Vets tend to send these cases to neurology on an extremely urgent basis. If you choose to wait it out, watch for incontinence or inability to poop and urine overflow (she may not be able to pee on her own..it will just come out when she gets full and would need to have her bladder expressed several times daily). It depends on which discs and nerves are affected. Please don't use any alternatives treatments until you see a heurologist. |
She NEEDS the K-Laser as soon as possible. |
The K laser is not widely accepted as a treatment for a dog that is not walking. The dog needs a neurologist. |
Any time there is inflammation, injury or surgery the K-laser promotes heeling. The K-laser is used in sports medicine for athletes all of the time to get the athletes back on the field ASAP. K-laser is also wonderful for arthritis. I have lots of experience with the K-Laser for myself my family & my pets & it is the best Laser out there for any kind of injury. When used immediately after surgery it cuts heeling time nearly in half. My Uncle had Polio as a child & is now in his 80's & has suffered from spine & neck pain all his life due to the Polio, he had K-laser last year & said he feels better & it has helped him better then any other treatment he's ever had. It's also used on Race Horses regularly fore lameness & injuries to the legs & spine & neck. So Yes the K-Laser is used for any kind of spine injury or any other injury. The faster you get rid of inflammation the faster you recover. |
Libby is better this morning. She only lost the use of one leg - her rear left leg. She can stand and walk a few steps. She couldn't do that yesterday. I'm feeding her a little bit of shredded chicken with her meds. That seems to work. I have the weekend off. So I will be right here with her. |
Happy to hear that Spiffy is improving! :) |
