15 yr old Hanna has CDC n heart failure Hello Everyone, Well my girl has gotten old and the reports are beginning to come in that she is developing some problems. Guess I have been in denial all along. :( Back in Sept the vet discovered a heart murmur and explained this will progress to cardiac heart failure eventually. I am to be more aware of things concerning her now. Such as she shouldn't be put in stressful situations such as boarding, (thank goodness we have a RV and she thinks that is her second home) so we can still travel. We shouldn't take her for such long walks as she will tire quicker. (So we got her a stroller, she loves going out) Her back left leg is full of arthritis and she falls over alot when she gets excited on tile floors. This week she has been diagnosed with Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome or Canine Dementia. I just thought she was getting old and stubborn so this was quit a surprise. I have been looking up a lot of info on this as the vet has suggested some medicine that may help. But the side effects are vomiting and diarrhea which is an on and off problem with Hanna to start with. So I'm not crazy about this idea and have been looking at alternatives. I came across Novifit and it seems to have good reviews. Has anyone tried this product? |
I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis...it's so tough to watch our precious ones age, isn't it :(? Have you discussed Anipryl? Many have used it here w/ amazing results. If tummy is a concern, perhaps ask for an anti-nausea med in conjunction w/ it...? |
Her system is delicate lately One of her problems this past year is diarrhea and vomiting. Not all the time but fairly regular. And I really don't want to add anymore to the mix. Just thought this stuff was a bit more natural. |
There is nothing harder than watching our beloved companions age and eventually leave us. Unfortunately, you are now on this slippery slope, and the feelings we experience as we watch them fail......just so very difficult. I really have nothing helpful to offer....just support, which does nothing for your precious baby girl. I lived thru one with dementia, and one post stroke.......I become nauseated remembering how heartbroken I was watching my precious little souls go thru this....my heart goes out to you as you now live this. |
I have two that are nearing fifteen this summer and it is so hard to know that they are nearing the end of their natural lifespans. I don't have any advice for you regarding the canine dysfunction. Is your dog on any medication for the heart? |
Oh dear this is so very hard. I do have an idea, not about the meds, but about the tile floors. You can put down yoga mats - a cheap non slip solution that if and when you want/need to can be easily folded up and put away. |
This morning she was acting really crazy This morning Hanna was pacing, staring at me, whining, pacing, staring at me and pacing some more. Have no idea what she wanted so I just picked her up and held her and talked to her for awhile. Turned the heat on in her bed and just loved her. This afternoon she seems to be doing much better. As a matter of fact she is in her bed sound asleep. Her sister is 11 yrs old (not really sisters) and she still acts like a puppy. Have decided to start a journal on Hanna, to see what works and what doesn't. Holding and loving worked today. Oh and no she isn't on any meds for the heart as it was just discovered and she isn't that far along. But was told about all warning signs and I am to take her in every couple of months for a check up. |
Sorry that your baby, your little girl, is getting on in age. If we're lucky to have them for years and years as you have, it happens to all of us and is the saddest part of having a furbaby. I can't imagine how painful it is to see her in this condition and know it must hurt your heart to see your old friend deteriorating and struggling. I know you will guide her through this with all the love you have and will keep her from ever suffering bad pain and fear. |
