My Yorkie has a collapsing trachea My Piper is 4 1/2 year old yorkie. She was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea today. She's been making a honking noise whenever she gets overly excited for over a year now so we knew some type of diagnosis was coming. She has two fractured teeth that we were going to get surgically removed this week....but when the vet gave her the pain meds and got ready to draw blood she became so anxious and her breathing became so difficult that she started turning blue. So my vet decided not to go through with the procedure. We took her for a surgery consult today where we were told she has a collapsing trachea. I'm very concerned and scared. With the surgeon's guidance we chose to do a medical management plan instead of surgery because of Piper's younger age. I'm just curious if anyone else who has dealt with this issue might have pointers, advice, something to make me feel better about this situation |
I'm sorry to hear about your baby's diagnosis. There are a lot of threads on here about this condition. Use the search on the bar at the top of your page. Also, I'm sure someone with more experience will post soon. |
I have had a few pups with varying degrees of collapsed trachea. When you say you chose medical management over surgery, I am assuming you mean for the trachea? There are many ways to manage it medically. First and foremost, keep her weight within normal range, keep her calm and cool. Heat and humidity can irritate them. I have had times where I would take a pup into my car and put his/her face up to the a/c vent. It helps sometimes! What are you doing to do about her teeth? I don't know how bad your pup is, but I can tell you that I have had pups live long lives with CT. I have had some that didn't do as well, but it is not an automatic death sentence. Welcome to YT! Look forward to getting to know you and Piper! :) |
