Bloody and runny stool Came home from work yesterday and found a pile of bloody runny mess. We have a vet appointment today. She seems okay. I fed her just chicken and rice and she gobbled it right up. She is drinking water. However she didn't seem her energetic self. She isn't spayed yet....was getting that done within the next few months. I am so hoping it is nothing serious. I recently switched her food to Merrick about a month ago, prior to that this has never happened. |
Aww, poor baby! I hope it's just a little bug of some kind...keep us posted. |
Thanks that's what I am hoping too. Thankfully I have pet insurance. I'll keep you posted. Her appointment is this evening at 6:00. She's doing fine right now. She ate this morning and was her usual self. Gums look great. We'll see how it goes. |
Just a little FYI. If you google Merrick and FDA recalls you will see they have had many issues with salmonella. I believe it was in their treats, but I personally would not trust that company after reading all of the reports on them. One of my fosters recently had the same symptoms. He is on metronidazole and doing fine. :) Usually with those symptoms, it is a bacterial thing or parasites. Keep us posted! |

I am very careful when I start seeing multiple recalls....quality control is an important part in the production of dogfood, and multiple recalls leads me to believe there is a problem in that area. Stress often causes them to have bouts of bloody diarrhea...coccidia is often the culpert....it is treated with metronidazole with excellent results. |
Thanks for the info. I'll let my vet know. That was one of the things that crossed my mind but for some reason I didn't think to do a Google search on them. This happened only after I switched to Merrick's. I just did a search on Merrick, looks like I'll be looking for different dog food. ugghhh....she is so picky and she really seem to like merrick's. Oh well better safe than sorry. |
What protein are you feeding? Merrick does claim to source everything (even their vitamins) from the US... I ask bc my Princess can't have beef...it triggers her colitis. She gets mucusy poop w/bright red blood @ the end...w/an urgency to go. Was her's anything like that? Maybe try switching proteins...relay w/vet? Hope the vet visit goes well. Our vet always prescribed anti-biotics w/a bland diet (white rice & chicken breast or tilapia) for a few days & it always cleared it up. Now I avoid beef for P & she always gets probiotics & digestive enzymes w/her meals. |

That is exactly what has been happening with Dutch. Her poop was just how you described it. It has happened twice so far. One time with the pot roast and then again with the chicken. At first I thought it was the pot roast that caused it because it didn't happen again. That was about two weeks ago. I switched her to the chicken and it happen again yesterday. She loves chicken (especially boiled chicken) and she has never had this reaction before. Both the pot roast and the chicken was Merrick. I've been feeding her rice and chicken for now. |
What did the vet say when you went last night? |

Hope your baby is ok. Please update when you get back from the vet. |
Is there an update from the Vet visit? Hoping all is OK. |
The vet thinks it is coilitis and gave her some Metronidazole. They got a stool sample and she doesn't have any parasites. She suggested I feed her chicken and rice for a few more days. Actually the vet said Dutch seems to be in good health. She had a normal stool this morning so I am hopeful this will past quickly. She's doing fine....she's back to barking at leaves blowing in the wind. :p Thanks for your support. Now if I could just get her to swallow her pill without so much fuss life would be perfect. |
Yay for normal stool! Hope Dutch will feel better real soon & you'll find the appropriate food for her. Who knows, it might not even have been the food, colitis can be caused by stress too. I had to eliminate all household cleaning products, like windex, no candles, no dryer sheets or air fresheners, no pesticides. Nothing that can set off an attack. |
