Diahhrea - Enteropathy I really have no idea how to use this site, but have been wanting to ask about a condition my 9 year old yorkie has been diagnosed with.....enteropathy! She has had diahrrhea since October. She has been on steroids, a few antibiotics, and diet changes. This diahrrhea began one day, and has just not stopped. She has had blood tests that indicate she is losing protein from her gut. This is a disease known to affect Yorkies. Yesterday she had X-rays of her abdomen and that showed an enlarged heart (something we did not know, no murmur), and her intestines indicated that enteropathy. I now need to get her to an internist who sees and treats this condition for a consult, to be followed by an endoscopy and biopsy, if they think her heart is able to withstand the therapy. Needless to say, I am devastated. She acts healthy! If anyone is familiar with this, please send me your information. I have gotten two vet opinions and both agree. I need some positive feedback! |
Hi and welcome to YT :). I hope you don't mind but I took your post from the thread you posted in, and moved it to have its own thread so you get more help. Does your baby have PLE, then? I'm thinking yes. So sorry to hear this. I wish I knew more about it, but I really don't. However, we do have members here who have dealt w/ this and hopefully will chime in. Usually, there is a special diet for this - is she on one? As far as the heart, try not to worry too much at this point - many, many dogs can live a looooong time w/ an enlarged heart/CHF. My Wylie has pre-CHF and is on Enalapril for it and does just great, he is 10. |
Thank you Yes, Abby has PLE. I had never heard of it so I am on a new adventure of how to keep this little girl alive and healthy. Thank you for giving me my own thread, as I have no idea how to do it. I hope I get responses from other people who have successfully treated a Yorkie with PLE. |
I'm sorry your little one is ill. I have no experience with PLE, but I've read things here from members who have had good success controlling it with diet. My little Rainbow Bridge baby, Ashley, was diagnosed with an enlarged heart when she was close to eleven. She lived to be one month shy of seventeen, and even in old age, her heart and lungs remained very strong. Ashley and I walked at least two miles a day, weather permitting, and that helped to keep her very active. I hope that your little one's health improves with treatment options and a change in diet. |
Welcome to YT! :) My Cookie has PLE. She was scoped and diagnosed in Dec 2011 and has lymphangectasia and IBD. She is doing very welL! Just had a check up and her albumin is fine! She responded to treatment (antibiotics and prednisone in 2011 and was only this past year taken off of the prednisone). Sometimes they must stay on a low dose every other day but each case is different. As to the enlarged heart, many times this is true but not always a big issue. I am sure the specialist will help you with understanding the role of her heart. Hopefully not a big deal! Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk! I'm kind of where you are now minus the enlarged heart. Our first sign that Sadie had a problem was noticing that her belly was bloated. It turns out that losing protein can make their vascular system leak fluid into their gut and chest. Sadie had a partially collapsed lung when we found out. We are still in the diagnostic phase. We have an appointment Monday at Auburn University vet school for a scope and biopsies. I was scared to death reading on the Internet. One article even said that no dog has lived more than two years with Lymphangiectasia. I've since learned that in fact there are many dogs even here on Yorkietalk that have successfully controlled this disease with diet and medication. I'm at the point that I just want to know what it is so that we can begin treating whatever it is. My advice is to find a good internal medicine vet that is familiar with PLE.
