Worried what the pain is from We rescued a Yorkie in September 2014. The vet estimated he is around 8 yrs old and is in good health except for his teeth which she had to remove 15 in December. Romeo (Yorkie's name) sleeps with me and the last two weeks has been waking up with an arched back, panting and sometimes yelping in pain. This goes on most of the morning and then he will start acting normal. Took him to the vet last week but it was in the afternoon so she really couldn't tell where the pain was coming from. She just said to put him on a probiotic in case it was his stomach. Would appreciate hearing from someone who else that might know what it could be. |
It could be so many things. I suggest you videotape his actions in the AM and try to rebook an appointment with the vet if this morning pain does not resolve with-in 2 or 3 days after adding the pro-biotic. I also might suggest to seek a specialist - internal medicine specialist. It will save you money on diagnositic tests in the long run. |
Still worried He has been on the probiotic for over two weeks now and he eats and drinks regularly and his tummy never seems to bother him so I am thinking it isn't that. It looks like it may be his hip. I gave him some pain medication mid-morning today and he has been fine all day. I am sure he will wake up again tomorrow all hunched up and hurting again. I just hoped someone else may have had similar experiences. |
I'm so sorry. I have no experience to help you. Have you been back to the vet? Hopefully someone with experience can give you some advice. |
I would have his back and neck xrayed ASAP bc it could very well be a disc. For that, what often works great is the combo of pain med, steroid, and muscle relaxant for about 10 days. It's a bit odd the vet didn't want to xray... |
Poor little Romeo :( This is just my personal opinion - but it sounds to me, too, like a disc/back problem (I have one, and I know what I'M like first thing in the morning)... Does he sleep soundly all night, and then have to kind of unwind himself? I would make a very early morning appointment with my vet - wrap him up warm and snug in a blanket, and get someone to drive me there so I could hold him close in the car. If you can't video him, then he needs to be seen 'as is' - and he needs an x-ray. |
Pain Hi! I hope your dog is doing better. Something similar happened to my dog and I took her to the ER and the vet, and it turned out to be a slipped disc in her back. They gave me pain meds and the disc slipped into the place within a few days. They told me to try to prevent her from jumping up, as well as jumping on and off high surfaces such as curbs and couches. |
