How to comfort a sick dog?
 
Moxie had some of her vaccinations and is subsequently tired and listless. I have honestly never seen her this unresponsive. Usually when she hears the fridge open, she comes RUNNING, she begs as I eat, she jumps and runs all over (I rescued her recently, she has a lot of bad habits to break). Although these are behavioral no-nos, they reassure me she is her usual self. Right now she is barely moving. I called the vet and the emergency vet buy they said this was normal and to only bring her in if she seemed catatonic or started vomiting and panting. I might bring her in anyways because this is scary. However, even if she will be ok, she obviously feels awful. I have her bed in front of the space heater and have covered her with a blanket. What else can I do to help her? I was going to go to a dance class but I'm not sure I should leave her like this :(

I would not care what the vet said....I would take her in for an exam if she is that lethargic!!

No it does not sound like an anaphylactic reaction, but it does not sound normal.

I don' t know why some vets continue to give multiple vaccines. :( This is not recommended anymore. which ones did she have?

I also would not cover her up in front of a space heater...she could overheat! Sounds a bit much.

I may have spoken too soon. It's dinner time and she is waiting beside her bowl, tail wagging, in decent spirits. But IA, if she goes back to being so UN-Moxie like, I will take her in. She got rabies, dapp, and lepto, and will get the boosters for dapp and lepto in 3-4 weeks. She still needs a few more but they wanted to space. Is that too much at one time do you think?
I also get nervous about the space heater, but she seems to love it :0 I use it for after the shower and one day she parked herself in front of it and has been a fan ever since. I think it makes the air too dry so am getting a humidifier but if it is actually dangerous for her, I will not let her stay so close.

If what the vet did was not a good thing, it would be great to know, because she is pretty fragile due to her rescue status and probably never seeing a vet before in her life, so I want her to be in good hands.

What rescue status? If she is a rescue, the rescue should have taken care of all of this????

YES, she had too many shots. :( They should only have one at a time spacing them out 2 - 3 weeks. Lepto is well known to have side effects and/or reactions and should only be given if lepto is in your area. Here is a link to the recommended protocol for vaccinations:

No, I literally rescued her myself. The rescue org can't attend to every dog in a bad situation because there are so many. So I decided to take this on myself, on my own, not as part of a rescue organization. They are guiding me but she is my dog, so it's up to me to get shot & spay, training, etc. Thanks for the link. This is very worrisome and I may just take her to the emergency vet. In terms of the space heater, I moved it away and she left her bed to get closer to it :0 She really loves it. She is tired but more with it currently and I am not going to my dance class to stay home and watch her. Still, it's upsetting to see that the vet (who came highly referred and has great reviews) is not familiar with this basic protocol :/

I would definitely ask the vet why he is not following AAHA protocol. Is the vet AAHA accredited? If not, I might look for another...not to say that the only good ones are, but it is a good start in looking for a vet.

I bought one of those little Amish fireplaces....a couple of them actually, because I do not turn heat on in the house until the indoor temp drops to 40 or below....so I have one of those Amish fireplaces in the sunroom, and one in the nursery....about 36 inches tall, 40 inches long, 12 inches wide....realistic looking flames in the fireplace, totally cool to touch for the dogs, no fire hazard associated with it....and then I went back and got a little one that is about 12 inches long, 10 inches deep, 12 inches tall....it fits on the end table right by my recliner, and my babies LOVE it!! They all lay down, lined up like birds on a wire, on the arm of the recliner, dozing in front of the fireplace! Space heaters scare the krappe out of me......

Thanks, I have some investigating to do. I wrote the vet an e-mail. Moxie was and is fine but I'm not happy about the situation. I will take her elsewhere to finish her shots and boosters. It seems quite a few vets do it this way (a few together and then finish 3-4 weeks later or once after that) :/

Some vets space them out and some do not. It is most important in small dogs. I am wondering about the bolded part below. What other ones are they insisting she needs??
