Sick puppy! Help! I am new to the group. I have a 10 week old puppy whose name is Jeter. He has been sleeping in the bed with my fiancé and I since the week we brought him home about 3 weeks ago. He woke me up to go potty and ended up throwing up before going back to bed. I cleaned it and went to get back in bed and he threw up again. He has since then dry heaved a few times and threw up frothy like mucos with a tint of color from his previous vomit which was a pink/orange I'm think from his food. I have never been primary care giver of a yorkie so I have no idea what to do for him. In between throwing up he was running around and wanting to play and would lay down and throw up. He got a round of simply guard topical for fleas the day before at 5:30 pm and started throwing up around 3am that next morning. Our vet is closed on Sunday's and I'm not sure if he is sick enough for me to take him to an emergency animal hospital. Any help?? |
Because he is so young and tiny, I would not hesitate to bring him to the emergency vet. These little pups can go down fast. Could be a reaction to the flea preventative, or something he ate, or an illness. I would bathe his body, shampooing and rinsing well twice. If his mouth gums are pale color and sticky to the touch, signs of serious dehydration, he definitely needs urgent care. I would discontinue use of this topical and talk to your vet about another one. |
Will he eat some carbs...like little bits of bread or cracker...and keep them down? The scary thing about this is, it's tough to say -- a 10wk old pup can go down FAST, and I mean fast. It's an extremely vulnerable age. Are his poos okay? |
After the bath, if he is eating and drinking well with no vomiting or diarreah, I would watch carefully. Personally, I would go to the vet today. In many places there are some that are open on the weekend without the emergency charge. I'm sorry your puppy is sick. I also try to make sure I don't get shots or try new things close to the weekend so that if there is a concern, my vet will be available. Hope he feels better soon, update us when you can. |
I think I would bring him to your vet and have him checked out. It sounds like you took him home around seven weeks old and that is too young. They need to stay with their mother for at least 12 weeks then go to their new families. Watch him carefully because they can go downhill fast. It would be adapt for me. Susan |
What is the flea treatment "simple guard" and who is the manufacturer? Is it recommended for pups that young, and what is the pups weight? You should look for a phone number on the packaging and call immediately to report your concerns, as it likely can be the cause of the problems. See a vet asap. Give him a bath with lots of soap on the back, try to get off what you can, but know that it is quickly absorbed and water resistant. Please update when you can, we worry about these little ones. |
