Advise: Benadryl dose for 2 lb 4 month Izzy Anyone else have experience with Benadryl? Oh what a day. Booster shots 2 in the hip My poor baby .....will not move. Slept for 2 hours , so I fixed her chicken and rice and she wolfed that down. Put her on pee pads , she hobbled off them then peed, and cried. Again won't move, called vet and she told me to give her 1/4 tsp Benadryl . 1/4 tsp?! An 11 yr old child gets a tsp! I gave her 0.5 mill. Which is a about half of an 1/8th tsp.. Only been 3 days since major snowstorm and the back roads are still deep. Cops diverted highway traffic to back roads because of accident, I got lost in the dark on bad roads to get the Benadryl 15 miles to town. I hope this stuff works😱 |
Benadryl won't do much for pain. The recommended dosage for Benadryl is 1mg/lb. I think the vet is right, but you need to check the math. I am thinking that the liquid is usually 12.5/5 ml. 5 ml is one teaspoon. Maybe try a cold compress on her hip? I am sure she will feel better tomorrow. For future reference, they really should not be giving her two shots at once. The recommendation now is to separate them, but she may have had discomfort anyway. |
Thanks for quick reply I wondered about that...it's an antihistamine ...I picked it up at drug store so I asked pharmacist if I had the right Benadryl (allergies) and why would vet recommend this to relieve booster shot pain. She said it helps with inflammation ......so I guess that makes sense. That surprises me about the dosage why then a child gets only a tsp I wonder.... Man she gave 2, 4 weeks ago too and she has to go back in another 3 weeks for more... She is a new vet I switched so I always have my radar up....other things she said kinda made me wonder too like, she hates bully sticks they are not cooked just hung to dry, contain all kinds of bacteria .....I wanted her to check out my probiotics , and digestive enzymes from Nutrisca and fish oils but she wouldn't even look at them, said my dog food should contain them and doesn't believe in adding in extra ....she didn't like my recipe for doggie cookies either. ....3 ingredients wheat germ, chicken baby food and dry milk. Don't give your dog milk products she said ....sheesh , so it's been a day of anxioty today... Thanks again for feed back....izzy is sleeping , if she wakes in night I will give her a little more medicine and cold compress.... |
I am kind of with your vet on all of the points she made. I would never give my pups bully sticks as there have been problems with bacteria and also obstructions. I don't use probiotics generally...if needed for GI stuff...that is something different. I also dont give them milk products because milk is difficult for them to digest. I am really not into giving many treats...I do give tiny pieces of sweet potatoes and they love them. Here is a link with guidelines on vaccines. I am honestly not familiar with puppy shots..maybe they do give more than one at a time. Perhaps someone else can give you feed back on that...or you can find the information here: https://www.aaha.org/public_document...guidelines.pdf |
My vet gave pain meds when sophie got her shots he said he doesn't usually but because she is so small she feels it more and even after that she was still tender. Maybe ask about that for the next shot. Hope she feels better soon |

Thanks for the link ..I'll check it out...I did question her on the 3 year vaccines and she don't do that until after a year and their Rabies for a year...which she gives a full dose for tinys which concerns me too...oh it's a learning process.... |
Oh myyyy 10 minutes till the next day ....hasn't been my day today.. That link didn't come up for me..... |
I only allow 1 vaccine to ever be given at one time - so that's something to consider for your little one; it's what most of us do. Next time, give the Benadryl about 45mins before the vaccine. The dose is 1-2mg per pound of body weight. Always, always know this dose by heart or have it posted somewhere bc it could save her life if she had a bee string reaction etcetera. |
Hope things are better today! :) |
Thank you Quote:
And wow this vet has a great reputation for finding out what's wrong with your pet and has emergency contact and is on call . How do you space your vaccines out ....I did ask about going 3 years out but she won't till after a year....is that acceptable? What I dont understand is on the side of Benadryl box for dosage in children ( who weigh far more than dogs) it says" do not use " on children 2 and under, and dr supervised 2 to 5 yrs and 1 -2 tsp ages 6 to eleven. The weight differences are confusing to me compared to dogs... |

But stops suddenly so I know she's tender. And she ate ....big sister zoey lays on her side to entice her to play ...so cute. |

I am sure she will improve throughout the day. Eating is a good sign! Next time you may want to ask the vet if you can give her something for the discomfort after her shots. |
