My Yorkie seems totally knocked out after pain injection!
 

My little girl has not been herself the past few days. She has been clingy and sleeping more than usual. She has not wanted to go for her walk and keeps getting up and lying down restlessly.

I took her to the vet tonight and he could not find anything, obviously, wrong with her. Her temperature is normal, and she is not constipated although her tummy is swollen. He decided to Xray her stomach to see if there was any blockage, but her tummy is fine. He said there was no excess gas or an abnormal amount of feces in her gut. He checked her joints for any sign of pain, as well. She is still eating well. He is doing a blood test to see if she has a hormone problem, which causes a swollen tummy. He decided to give her an intra muscular injection for pain and told us to watch and see if she is much happier with pain relief. Well, by the time she got home she was feeling sleepy. She ate her food and then looked very miserable, so I picked her up and she felt floppy. I put her into her bed and she went straight to sleep and has been asleep for 2 hours now. I am just concerned that she has had too big a dose of painkiller? Perhaps I am just being a neurotic mommy?! I am constantly checking her breathing! If she sleeps like this I won't be able to tell if the injection helped her problem.

What do you think - should I phone the after hours number at the vet and tell them she is so sleepy?

Yes, I would call the after hours number, just to be sure everything is as it should be.

Just be sure that you're able to wake her and that she can become "alert" if needed. Otherwise, I'd leave her be since she probably needs the sleep.

Did you discuss the possibility of pancreatitis, which is common in yorkies? It can be painful and cause bloating...

I never thought of pancreatitis. I will definitely ask the vet about it. Thank you so much for mentioning it.

I thought I would write an update.

Tootsy slept soundly all the time and I picked her up a couple of times to take her outside to urinate. She wasn't able to walk and I had to carry her. I took her outside again a about 4.00am and she did pass urine but was still very unsteady on her feet. I had to pick her up and put her into her bed. This morning she looked a little more alert and is not so wobbly on her feet when I take her outside. She has barked a couple of times which was more normal. She does not get up unless I pick her up and put her on her feet. She just lies there dozing/sleeping.

I phoned the vet and he said it was most unusual, but that he was not too worried, as she seems to be improving. He said I must just wait for the blood test regarding a hormonal problem that could be causing the bloating. He said only to bring her in if she develops any other symptoms.

I am still concerned about her and hate the idea of her just dozing and sleeping for a week! I don't know what else to do, though.

I am glad she is getting better, SLOWLY, but at least better..... Just be sure you get the name of that pain shot she was given, along with the dose she got, and dont let them give her that again....she is having difficulty metabolizing the drug and/or the dosage she was given.....or he just outright gave her too much....

As far as what got her to the vet in the first place, bless her heart....my first guess was pancreatitis....please keep us updated on what they find out about your baby....
