Has anyone out there ever experienced GME with their Yorkie?

I have not, but I know people here have - so hopefully they'll chime in. I'm going to move your thread to the ER section so it gets more attention there :).

Does your baby have it?

Thank you for responding. My baby died almost a year ago with GME.
I have just put a deposit on a little guy 12 days old. After going through this deadly disease I'm really nervous.

I also lost my yorkie to NME last February. I am so sorry you had to go through that. I had never heard of that disease until my Layla got it. I know a great deal about it now. I had another yorkie for 16 years & never had any health issues. Layla was not quite 4 when she was diagnosed. There is a Dr. Sisson out of Boston that has had success with putting it into remission but it is not an easy path to take for owner or dog.
I understand exactly how you feel. I am not ready for another baby yet but I have contacted a few breeders to get their take on this terrible disease. I am nervous also. Layla was diagnosed with idiopathic genetic NME. Ideopathic means unknown cause. I am wondering if vaccinations are causing this, I feel that my dog was over vaccinated. Just my opinion, & I am referring to MY dog.
When you are looking at breeders make sure you ask them about this & see if they have heard of it. If they have been breeding for awhile they should be familiar with it.
I am already looking into holistic vets. I will find a vet before I adopt another yorkie. And I will, get another yorkie. There is a vet called Dr. Jean Dodds. She is very conservative with vaccinations & has a vaccination protocol you can follow. You can titer test (blood test) them after that to see if the still carry the immunity & if they do they is no need for more vaccination.
I know you are nervous but don't let it worry you out of a new baby. Information is your best friend & I know some of the people on here will give you some wonderful information. I will be glad to answer any questions you have if I can. Bobbie Jo

Thank you Bobbie Jo for replying. My heart goes out to you witnessing this terrible disease. My little Titan was cared for by specialists at the University of Tennessee Veterinarian Hospital. They are world known for treating special small breed cases. We spent thousands of dollars tying to help our baby. They did get him into remission for almost two years. But as you know this disease is fatal. The Drs. Talked about vaccinations, but couldn't know for sure if it was cause by environmental or pre conditions. My new little one is one month old. The breeder said he has heard of this disease but didn't know much about it. The breeder will start his vaccinations soon. I believe the first series will be DDP. Very little amount given every two weeks. I ask him about separating them. He said he couldn't do that because all the manufacturers combined them. This really worries me. Hopefully my baby will be able to come home at 10 weeks. I will talk to my regular vet about all other vaccinations. I will do everything possible to keep my baby in good health. This breeder is an AKC breeder and he supposedly does health screening on his sirs and dams. Keeping my fingers crossed and saying Yorkie prayers for everyone out there.

Muffin had GME. MY Vet gave her two shots together while I was gone for 12 days for my mom's funeral back east. One of the shots was rabies. She was
1 1/2 years old and perfectly healthy when I left. She was dying when I came home. My hospital was connected with UC Davis and they said she was going to die and wanted to put her on steroids for the time she had left. I refused and found holistic Vet who CURED her and saved her life. Heavy metal poisoning.
Muffin passed away a year or so ago from a tragic accident of being dropped on her head, not from GME. She was perfectly healthy at the time.

My previous Yorkie baby had NME. She was treated by a vet neurologist in Jacksonville Florida. I handler for 5 more years after the diagnosis and she died of renal failure probably due to the high doses of medication is took to keep her going.

It is genetic in almost all cases. So a good breeder should be aware if it has presented in their line. and yes, you are correct - it was a very expensive issue to treat and care for.

Schicks, I would still look into Dr.Dodds vaccination protocol for future reference, it will give you a guideline. Find a vet that WILL work with you. And make sure you get insurance, I wish I would have. I spent 3000 just to get her diagnosed & don't get me wrong it was money well spent. I just felt that the side effects were so horrific & I did not want to put her through that or the family. Still haunts me. Anyway, it is a rare disease so try not to worry. Just be informed & that will take you a long way. Enjoy all the love you will be receiving & giving. I miss that. BJ

Thank you all for responding to GME. It's so sad to hear so many that had to deal with this disease emotional, financial, stressful, terribly sad. My little guy was a fighter. All the chemo and meds. Took their toll.
I have read about this Dr. Dobbs protacale and I will for sure talk to my vet. The problem is my new little one will already have several boosters before he is ready to come home.

If you look up her protocol it will tell you the vaccination schedule from birth. It may not be so far off from what your breeder is doing. Print it off & discuss it with your breeder. They do need vaccinations after they are weened from mama. I just wish they would quit using boosters & do them individually a week apart. They can do this but most vets won't. I will find one that will work with me when I am ready for my puppy. I would think the breeder would work with you also. I would be willing to pay if that was the issue. Vaccinations should not be one size fits all.
Look up her protocol it may make you feel better about what your baby is getting. I am not a breeder so I am not an expert on baby shots but I am sure someone on here can chime in.
