Vets Good or Bad ?
 
After reading so many of the posts, I have to ask if some of these vets get their degree out of a cracker jack box ?

LOL, I have often wondered that myself. I know there are many good vets but I have had some very bad experiences with a few. I have a VERY GOOD vet & I have been using him for 18 or 19 yrs now.

Just like with everything there will be good and bad. There will always be people who do things for money or get blinded by money so you just have to do your best to pick the best one you can and that you trust. Sometimes though vets are not always given all the information or the person misunderstands or sometimes never goes to the vet and just says they did.

We must also remember that not everyone who posts stories about vets are being totally honest.

I have seen a lot of posts where people say things that make me think they probably didn't want to spend the money and rather than say that, they acted like the vet didn't offer to do whatever it is that was standard.

Also, as mentioned by Taylor, there is good and bad in every profession. You just have to keep looking for a vet that fits.

"C's get degrees!" Not every college graduate is an A student. Yet, most college graduates get jobs...

Vets are either good or bad depending on opinion, environment, experience, mood etc. They are human and, as such, fallible. Grades, in my opinion, have little do with clinician performance. You can have a straight A student and an incompetent practitioner who fails to put theory into practice and vice versa.


It is frustrating that the people we look up to are so flawed, sometimes. My own "doctors" are annoyingly incompetent which is partly due to the performance "targets", complacency, ego, distractions, etc.


What can be done about it? It's not like they don't already get paid enough!

In nursing school, there was a frequent joke: "What do you call the person who graduates at the bottom of their medical school class?" -- a doctor! :rolleyes:

I agree, there is good and bad in every profession.

I also think there is a fair amount of inaccuracy in online posts regarding vets. Some are so outlandish, I have to think they are made up, like "My dog isn't breathing and the vet said let's wait and see what happens." I'm being silly, but I've read things nearly as bad.

There is also innocent inaccuracy. Reminds me of asking my dad about his doctor visits. I don't bother asking him anymore and meet with the doctors myself. :D

Im very fortunate I have a down to earth vet that is great with animals and I trust him so much with chester

Yes, I agree there are good and bad vets. So far I have been very lucky

Many, many years I worked in a hospital and always thought it funny that families would thank the dr for saving their loved one. Excuse me, where was your dr during the code blue, I bet home all snugly in his bed and it was the nurse who started the code and worked hard to save them. We had one medical resident who would come on the unit for his final evening rounds, see that i was the nurse in charge and mutter, I guess I wont get any sleep tonight. Sorry, bud, just doin my job.

I agree with many, vets come in all ranges of proficiency, just like any other medical or for that matter any other service person.


We do have some threads here - about what to expect from a vet on first puppy visit etc.


I also think you need to ask yourself what are your expectations of your vet?

My vet has given us poor treatment and told me to give Kiki things that has endangered her life. Therefore we are looking for a new vet. Any advice on things to look for or questions to ask? I'm going to tour one next week that I'd AAHA certified which makes me feel better but anyone can have problems

If you haven't yet, you might want to check out AAHA's website...it has a lot of information on it and may give tips on how to pick a vet. I honestly don't know off hand if they do....

Some things cannot be asked ... you almost have to take a dog to a vet and watch carefully how the exam is done. Also, take note at how the vet is with you....does he/she listen to you? That is something I find SO important because a good vet or doctor will be a good listener!

You definitely want to know about anesthesia protocol. There is some information in the YT library on that.

:thumbup: Agree with all of Linda's points, especially this one. We left our first vet because she talked at me, rather than discussing things with me. She gave orders, did not want to be questioned, and behaved like there are no options.
