yorkie has pneumonia vet is pretty sure my little 7 year old (always will be my baby) has pheumonia. shes eating, playing and acting normal besides a kennel cough-like cough and fluid in one lunge. shes on antibiotics. i would like more input from anyone on what i can bring up to my vet or do for her to have some relief? been to the vet 3 times and going again this week. cough hasn't let up in over a month thank you :) |
Did she check his heart. If he is coughing and has fluid in lungs it could be heart related. my dog was coughing and had fluid in his lungs and it was heart related. Just saw your post on something pushing on the trachea. Could be the heart thats what happend to my dog. The heart was enlarged and pushing on the trachea and making him cough. I think vets always jump to the conclusion of kennel cough every time they hear a dog has cough. Has he ever coughed before or did this just start |
the most my vet said about her heart was something is pushing it but never really concluded much. I had another vet look at the X-ray since the first wasn't sure. one of her lunges was 1/2 larger than the other and he said it had fluid in it. That's what lead him to thinking it was pneumonia and he said that's what is pushing on her heart. The next time I took her the lunge went down some This is the first time she has ever coughed like this :(:( which makes it so heart breaking So an enlarged heart can cause this? |
Yes it can. Is she on lasix pill. It is a water pill to help with the fluid in the lung. |
yikes! No she isn't! she is on two liquid antibiotics and loratadine (dog safe over the counter allergy med. to help with the coughing. my vet told me I could add that in) see this is why I like this site! thank you for responding |
not to sound frustrated, but after 3 visits how can these vets not know whats wrong? they are both at the same location and work together. im just hoping they aren't doing this to rack up the bill which is already over 1000 its concerning that she isn't getting better and they aren't giving answers. if its something that takes a while to get over that's fine but at least be able to tell me that not leave me with a bunch of question marks after each visit |
This is what it is used for. I would think if it is a month and not better they need to look into other reason. I would think pneumonia would go away after a month with antibiotics. When I first brought Buster home he was diagnosed with a severe case of kennel cough. We tried different combinations of medications for over a month and the cough would not go away and then got worse verging on pneumonia. Buster had to stay ovenight on IV antibiotics before he eventually kicked his cough.. Do not vaccinate your dog if they are sick. My Vet did (should I say ex Vet) and that is what caused Buster to get worse. If you have another Vet practice in your area I would go get a second opinion. Saying prayers for your baby it is terrible when the coughs rack their tiny bodies. I would also conside maybe seeing a specialist or go to a Vet teaching school. Best wishes. |

Yes :) that was one of the first tests we did. I'm headed to the vet in an hour :/ hopefully we will get more information as this vet is already the second vet I've gone too about this :( |
If things don't get better soon, you may want to have your vet re-test for valley fever. My yorkie was mis-diagnosed several years ago. He was first started on antibiotics and when he didn't improve, we did the VF test. His first VF test came back negative. Exrays showed what appeared to be pneumonia so he was treated with a few more different antibiotics with no improvement. Several weeks later we ended up taking him to a different vet, who diagnosed him with pneumonia secondary to Valley Fever. He improved pretty quick once we started him on antifungal medication. Not all dogs with VF will have a positive titer, especially if they've been sick for a while. Living in Arizona and especially at this time of the year when the desert is very green, the spores are everywhere and it is so common in this area. Does your dog have an elevated white blood cell count indicating infection? Diana |
I'm so scared of valley fever so let's hope that's not the case. But her white blood count is up showing infection. I just got home from the vet and he confirmed that it's not a heart condition. She would get fluid in her lunges but it would be in a different spot. X-rays should she's getting better but I'm not seeing that since her cough is exactly the same :/ |
I hope its not Valley Fever too, but it is also not a death sentence. Most dogs do really well with it. We nearly lost my little guy from the pneumonia. His WBC's climbed to nearly 40,000 and none of the antibiotics were any help. When we finally got the VF diagnosis and got him on meds for both, he improved amazingly fast. Then it was just a matter of continuing the fluconazole for a couple of years until the fungus finally cleared. After the initial infection it did not really affect his quality of life. I had a shihtzu who got CHF. (Congestive heart failure) She coughed and wheezed a lot. Often got fluid in her lungs. At age 13, even with meds for her heart, I sadly had to put her down. |
I couldn't imagine anything worse. I am so sorry to hear that! Sounds like a heart condition has been ruled out. My biggest concern now is valley fever. I'm taking her back in a week. By then if it's not better I'm going to ask them to retest her |
Did the new vet prescribe a different antibiotic? Are you seeing any improvement yet? For the coughing, sometimes standing in the bathroom with a hot steamy shower running will help to ease the cough. Diana |
About two weeks ago we added a new antibiotic. That's an excellent idea about the shower. ill add that in today! :) |
Just curious - how long on antibiotics with no improvement? I'm guessing longer than two weeks? What did the new vet say? Does he still think its pneumonia? Diana |
We started one a month ago and that was with the first vet who had no idea what was going on When I got the second opinion two weeks later he said pneumonia and added in a stronger antibiotic. He said its a longer processes to get rid of it. That was two weeks ago :/ and now we are doing both for another two weeks. Each time I go he says she's getting better :/ and her lunge seems to be getting smaller... I'm not a vet though, I hardly know what I'm looking at Also want to add she is eating, drinking and playing still as normal. I'm hoping that's a good sign |
Eating, drinking and playing normally is definitely a good sign! Its been a long time ago, but it seems like my lil guy was on antibiotics for at least a couple of months. The vet monitored him every few weeks with either blood work to check his WBC or a chest exray to check his progress. So pneumonia does take a long time to get over. I've done the shower idea multiple times now and her cough changed and started sounding like she was coughing something up. Now she's hardly coughing without cough meds!!!! Thank you for the tip |

So glad your dog is feeling better now. You have given me hope. My little puppy is just over 13 weeks old, we have had her for 6 weeks and she has been ill the whole time. She came to us with a cough and runny nose and the cough has never disappeared. She has had 2 rounds of antibiotics. The second set was given because the vet advised the cough has went into her chest. When we went back her chest was clear and she was only really coughing when she woke up. The vet gave her, her first vaccination and she has gotten worse since then. We are back to square one. I have been doing the steam with the shower and she has occasionally brought up white phelm but only a handful of times in the 6 weeks. Like yours she eats and generally sleeps well (minus the coughing fit a couple of times during the night) and plays great! :( |
Yikes! I'm surprised they did the vaccination with your baby having a cough. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that vaccines can make it worse, my vet even advised to hold off on Maggie's, since she's due for her annual. I feel so bad for your sweet thing! We have been doing antibiotics since early December and its only been this last week that her cough has gotten better, not gone but better. The shower idea I felt really helped her too! It can't hurt. Also if you are doing antibiotics for a while try getting a good probiotic to help their immune system |

I want to thank everyone for all their help. I asked to do another blood test and unfortunately it did come back with VF. Im going to do another thread for natural ways of fighting this so if anyone has any suggestions I am wanting to hear them. I am looking for supplements that can be done in addition to her medicine (fluconazole) |
