My Yorkie has PLE
 
Hi Yorkie owners,
My 7 yo Yorkie Shyanne has PLE - I would like to hear from others who have a dog with this disease and what your experiences have been. I am so overwhelmed by all of this and want to see what you have done and how your dogs are doing.:(

What does PLE stand for?

Hi and welcome to YT. So sorry your little one has PLE. I have no experience with it but hopefully others here can tell you more about it.

My Cookie has lymphangectasia and IBD. SHe was diagnosed in Dec. 2011 and is doing very well.

I, too, was overwhelmed in the beginning. It took a while for me to get over the anxiety of this condition....every time Cookie looked even a tad bit off, I would run to the vet and have blood work done. I still watch her closely, but I am so much more relaxed about it now. She is on the same home cooked diet that she was put on at the time and she loves it! :) She recently had blood work done and all is well.

Does your Shyanne have symptoms? Is she on medications? Have they suggested a food for her?

Hi - Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. This disease has kept me so busy - I can't think!!
It stands for protein losing enteropathy. It is something that Yorkies are 10 times more predisposed to. It is quite complicated but what happens is that their bodies don't absorb protein and it leaks into their body. Her abdomen is HUGE. It also causes vomiting and diarrhea.
Thankfully though she is doing a little better right now. There is no cure but it can be managed through medication. Right now she is on about 10 of them!!

Oh wow so glad to hear a success story. It is a huge change for us ( I have another Yorkie as well) and I certainly have been overwhelmed!! She is doing a little bit better right now but is on a prescription diet and lots of meds!!

Hi - I would like to talk to you a little more about what you did for Cookie. What is the homemade diet - did your vet recommend it? Also I was told that Shyanne would probably have to be on medication for life. When were you able to start cutting it down or out completely. She is on a lot of medication. Prednisone, Atopica, metronidazole,
cerenia, Tylan, b-12 shots, compounded aspirin and prescription diet.

Has she had a biopsy done?

I know what PLE is. That is what Cookie has....lymphangectasia IS a PLE. There are four different types of PLE. Here is a great, informative link:
