hello can someone help please my yorkie has started having seizures.at first it was just one, then he started having them more often and back to back the vet just said to keep him calm and that was that but everytime he has one i put honey in his mouth and it brings him out of the seizure for a while i just dont dont know what to do he is 5 years old does anyone have any advice for me |
It sounds like hypoglycemia rather than seizures if honey brings him out of it. It seems like seizures the vet would want to give meds I would get a second opinion |
Go to a different vet!! Good luck to you! |
Time for a new vet. |
I know it has been posted not to give honey as it can contain bacteria I believe. I will have to search for that post. Nutrical or Kayro syrup is better followed by protein or they will just crash again after the sugar dissipates. The Nurtical/kayro gets the blood sugar up and the protein balances the system and sustains them long term. Try feeding small meals over the course of the day. I would be worried that this is more than hypoglycemia and I would take them to another Vet. Your current Vet may not be as informed about issues in the tinier breeds. Hypoglycemia and seizures arer serious issues and if they are reoccurring you need to address what is causing them. Best wishes and prayers for you and your Yorkie. |
If it is low blood sugar that is still not normal for an adult dog and normally means something else is wrong. Also after sugar you need to get your dog to eat some of there regular food. |
You need to see another vet. This baby needs medical diagnosis and care3....this is not a normal occurance and you have to find out what is going on and how to stop the seizures. |
I forgot to add Hi and welcome to YT. I am sorry it is under these circumstances but that is how I found YT and they helped me with my sick Yorkie as well. But all we can do is offer advice and support. The best advice that you can get is to take you Yorkie to Vet as only they can do the correct tests to determine what is really going on and causing these episodes. |
My dog from years ago ate chocolate chips that my daughter had dropped on the ground.this caused my dog to have seizures he spent a week in the hospital before recovering. He could have gotten into something poisonous. Just a thought to consider. |
can someone help me thank you all for your advice and i am taking rosco to the vet this morning to find out what the problem is and it is great to know that there is a place like this that people can come to and talk about their yorkies i am glad i found you guys bless each and everyone of you and merry christmas to all and happy new year |

My Gina started having seizures at the age of five. It was dx'ed as epileptic seizures. She only got them when she became very upset. No meds were needed as she only had them several times per year. Good luck with your little one. |
A dog 5 years old with seizures isn't likely having them due to low blood sugar. I would suspect brain disease or epilepsy and would see a neurologist once the general vet rules out any medical causes. |
